The trade with the Padres I saw was Assad and Alcantera for Mike King.

The article seems to think Owen Caissie is in the mix. I don't follow the Cubs, but I thought Caissie was well regarded. If he is, it's a lot to give up for one year of Dylan Cease, especially if you're the Cubs and not really going anywhere.

I think that Triantos, Caissie and Alcantara are potentially available. There aren’t enough spots for those three unless they dump Happ.

He's well regarded. Hit .278 and 19 HRs in 127 AAA games. Mervis had similar numbers in 2023. Look what happened to him. They have too many prospects. If you can have a top 3 rotation of Steele, Cease, and Shota --- go for it.

Nickey Lopez signed by the Cubs. So glad the Cubs are taking ELITE defense seriously.

I'm at a loss for how low Cincinnati is. Great for a futures bet on them though, I'll have to look into that. Last year they dumped on the Tigers and I was able to get in on them at a great price.

Correct, Terry Francona doesn't take that job if he doesn't think they'll be better than that prognostication.

smart move by the Cubs passing on Bregman at that price tag

What in his numbers suggest he should be a 40 million per year player. He's a lot like Bellinger where he is living off great years from his youth that made him look like he was going to be one of the greats. That was half a decade ago.

Yeah you cannot tie up that kind of money unless he is the final piece. I still have a hard time believing this is a 90 win team. Lots of youth going to have to breakout for that to happen.

That and those numbers he had in his youth was because he was a fucking cheater.

They need someone to break out of their mediocre rut, he might have been that someone. Also, four years is not a long commitment.

Tribune with a nauseating column praising Hoyer and Ricketts for approving an "exceptional" and "strong" offer to pursue Bregman...even though it wasn't anywhere close to the deal made with the Red Sox. (Cubs were at 4x30 with opt-outs after 2026/2027, Red Sox at 3x40 with opt outs after 2025/2026.) And then of course noting that the Cubs would not allocate that unspent Bregman money to other free agents.

I think it would have been stupid to sign him for either of those amounts, but I'm tired of owners saying "we tried!" No, you didn't.

They never had a shot. Bregman is like a 1.25 OPS at Fenway

Or maybe it was because the Red Sox’ offer was 1.25x the Cubs’.

You can overpay for a guy who loves the ballpark. The regression gets minimized.
