Do we stick with what we got Marmol/Guzman or look on the trade/FA market?

Or does it really depend on what is out there. One reason I wish Lou had made the change earlier is more of a chance to see these guys close. Nice half season would have been nice.

One name I hate to say it on the trade market is Kerry Wood. Wouldn't be surprised to see Hendry at least make a call.

Billy Wagner is looking more and more like he will become a free agent - I'd take a chance on him.

Brad Lidge is close to his way out of the closer role - he might be worth a shot assuming his problems of recent vintage aren't arm or shoulder related.

There is not an answer internally - the Cubs need to go out and get a closer.

Marmol is not the answer.

I believe Marmol is the answer. Shoulda been closer from Day 1. I think if given the job for a full season he would excel...and save his arm in the process. Way too much work the last couple years.

Unfortunately, I think you will get the chance to see if you are right or not. I don't see them unfortunately adding a lot of payroll to this team. Long term contracts are going to choke this team over the next couple of years unless they can convince an AL team how good Soriano would look as their DH - but I don't see that happening.

Correct. People are quite quick to forgot about the absolute dominance he's shown the previous two years. By the way people talk about him this year, you'd think he is Neal Cotts.

After this year is over, tell him to relax, rest him arm up and he's our closer next year.

Milton Bradley and Soriano are both gonna be attractive DH's if the Cubs pay some, like half, their deals they could be rid of them, I think.

I can see the Ricketts family doing exactly that to get out from the albatross of these bad contracts. If they could jettison one or both guys and get rid of Fontenont, Heilman and Miles - I'd consider that a very succesful off season.

Getting rid of those 3 is not a challenge...just like a bum...just dont look at em and theyll go away...seriously those guys could all be let go with very little reprecussions financially or otherwise.

I don't think I could ever cheer for Valverde. He's a bigger douche on the mound then Zambrano.

I agree on the douche factor, but if he is a Cub next year and has a 1.18 WHIP and 2.3 ERA..i can deal.

I'm still firmly on the Marmol for a closer bandwagon though

Maybe a douche...but Valverde throws some of the nastiest stuff I have ever seen.

Considering your moniker, that must be pretty pretty pretty nasty.

It probably depends on how Marmol finishes the season. If he succeeds, he'll keep the job. If not, acquiring a new closer may depend on if the Cubs are able to expand their budget beyond the increases that these backloaded contracts will cause.

Marmol. Valverde would be a total Hendry move, but I doubt Hendry is still the GM come next year.

I would be very happy if Brad Lidge was the closer for the 2010 Chicago Cubs...

I have a feeling that guy would be happy too...

As far as stuff is concerned Marmol has the potential to be the best closer in the game for years to come. He has the nastiest slider i've ever seen and when he has his fastball on point it makes his slider seem that much more filthy. The problem with Marmol lies in his head. I don't think he has the mentality to go out and seal the deal on a consistent basis. He falls in love with his slider way too often and leaves his fastball on the shelf and when he does finally decide to throw a fastball it's being crushed.
Marmol goes on streaks when he's absolutely unhittable and then has stretches where he's wild beyond belief. That's not good for a closer. Maybe a new pitching coach or hell give Mariano Rivera a call and soak up some advice from him or something. With that said I'd still give the ball to Carlos next season. He should be going into training camp with the job already and not have to worry about the Cubs bringing someone else in for the job
