I wanted to start a thread because I didn't really have a good place to put this kind of stuff.

Quote:
Bruce Miles expects the Cubs to tender contracts to Mike Fontenot, Koyie Hill, Sean Marshall, Jeff Baker, and Angel Guzman, but not lefty Neal Cotts. Cotts is coming back from Tommy John surgery, and the Cubs could re-sign him to a minor league deal.

Fontenot - Why?
Hill - Yawn. There's got to be better backups somewhere. As long as he plays 2x every 10 games at most I guess that's cool. I miss Hank White.
Marshall - Serviceable, but damn I wish they'd pick a lane with this guy. So he's a starter for sure with Lilly out?
Baker - I guess this is another servicable guy.
Guzman - Good to know.
Cotts - Sucks. Bye.

Hill's not a terrible backup, it was good to see that he could handle playing every day if it was needed. He's not great at the plate, but he's very good defensively and the pitchers seem to like throwing to him. Plus he only has 5 digits on his right hand, so that's cool.

Adequate maybe. You're right, not a terrible backup. Just not a good one IMHO. I wouldn't expect good results from him playing everyday in the event of a long term injury to Soto. Yes his offense is the problem. See ol Hank might bat 240 but damn when he gets those hits seems to be when you need them the most. I miss that guy.

I like Blanco too, but they're pretty much the same guy. Blanco's just more expensive.

Please tell me that Fontenot will not be the starting second basemen in 2010.

Yep - I have to admit that I was wrong on his potential, and I don't really care about anybody else on that list either...

I think Baker would have a shot if Hendry doesn't sign anyone else.

I figure on Baker too.

Marshall needs to be a starter, Fontenot & Hill are fine for backups, Cotts sucks, and I'd like to see a full healthy year out of Guzman.

Darko has a serious case of the anti-Koyie going on. Probably a race thing. Anywhoo, Koyie brings everything to the team that Hank does, he's just 30 years younger than Hank.

I sure hope troowidit has some witty things to add to this thread!!!!

Hell, I don't hate the guy. He's just never on base is all. (Also I don't think he brings the defense, arm, and play/pitchcalling that Hank does but hey whatever).

I'd rather have Blanco too, but that's not possible...

Koyie Hill sucks. Im glad you rescued your fingers from your circular saw or whatever the fuck that whole deal was, but you still suck.

Just talking about 2009 exclusively, what was it that Koyie didn't do that the beloved Soto did for the Cubs? Koyie was more than serviceable as a regular catcher last year - provided that the rest of the lineup was intact.

Hill had a slightly better average, Soto had a slightly better OBP and SLG. All numbers were pretty fucking low last year.
I have to think that Geo has a much greater upside potential than Hill. We've seen what Geo can do, and we see what Hill can do. Jesus look at his consternation over a lousy backup catcher. Shit keep the guy I don't really care that much. All I said about the guy was "yawn" and I stick to that.

I agree with this, don't get me wrong. I just think that Koyie would be fine, and better defensively, at a cheaper price in the long run. Plus less chance of injury, overeating, bong-pulling, and general disinterest. Soto's gonna want some $$$ in the near future too. He ain't worth it, IMO. Not at this point.

K.Hill, as a regular starting catcher, is bad, but the real problem was that Soto was a bust last season, forcing Hill to play more. As a backup, Hill is fine, but the Cubs really need Soto to bounce back and be the guy (or at least close to it) that they were hoping for, and that will restore the natural role of Hill.
