When Mike Quade writes his first lineup Monday night as manager of the Cubs, he's expected to have a new first baseman.

Tyler Colvin will likely start at first for the Cubs when they open a three-game series against the Nationals in Washington. Quade takes over for Lou Piniella, who moved up his retirement date to Sunday so he could go home to Tampa, Fla., to take care of his ailing mother.

Colvin has been working out at first since the Cubs traded three-time Gold Glove Award winner Derrek Lee to the Braves on Wednesday. The rookie hasn't played first since his sophomore year in college at Clemson. He had his most intense workout Sunday under the tutelage of bench and infield coach Alan Trammell.

The left-handed-hitting Colvin, who has played outfield since he was drafted by the Cubs in the first round in 2006, leads all Major League rookies with 18 home runs. He's batting .251 with 15 doubles, 44 RBIs and a .815 OPS. This month, Colvin has scuffled, hitting .179.

He didn't need to borrow a glove. Colvin has his first base glove from college as well as a new mitt he's trying to break in.

The Cubs' other options at first base are Xavier Nady and Jeff Baker.

Great news,THE HOFF is back! Him & Colvin in the same line-up will give the Cubs pop from the left.

Cubs add Soto, Hoffpauir for Quade's debut
August 23, 2010 11:47 AM | No Comments By Paul Sullivan

In advance of Mike Quade's first game as Cubs manager, the team reactivated catcher Geovany Soto from the 15-day disabled list Monday and recalled first baseman Micah Hoffpauir

To clear roster space, outfielder Sam Fuld and catcher Welington Castillo were sent down to Triple-A Iowa.

Colvin has gotten so few at-bats this past month.....it will be nice to see him play regularly at 1st and in the outfield. To have 18 Homers in just 295 at bats, is pretty (1/2 a season) impressive. It's even more impressive when you consider how many times he went several days without an at-bat. I would like to see both Colvin and Hoffpauir play regularly, to see who does better at 1st base and how well each can do with regular at-bats. Perhaps both can find spots in the lineup. No point in giving guys like Baker and Nady at-bats. Time to start figuring out who fits into plans for 2011 and where they fit in.

How the hell is nady still on this team? Of all the possible guys to ship out on a waiver trade, this guy has to be the easiest to shop. I am also done with this showcasing of Fuk. Sell him back to the team from which he came. He probably wants to get the hell out of here anyways and be back home.

If this guy was signed for 4 years at 1.5 mil, nobody would bitch. He is the Asian Reed Johnson.

But he is signed for much more and he doesn't have the cool beard either. There is no room for him either. Gotta make room for Brett Jackson.

He's even got some wheels on him. He needs to go to the fall league (not sure if he went last year, but he would have been awful young to have gone the same year he was drafted) With a good showing there and a good spring training he could easily skip AAA and crack the 25 man roster.

Dernier named Cubs' first base coach
August 23, 2010 2:45 PM | 1 Comment By Paul Sullivan

WASHINGTON -- Former Cub outfielder Bob Dernier, the club's roving minor league outfield and base-running coach, has been brought up to serve as Mike Quade's first base coach the rest of the season.

Ivan DeJesus moves from first to thrid base. Dernier, who was part of the "Daily Double" along with Ryne Sandberg on the 1984 Cubs, is in his fourth season on the Cubs' coaching staff
