Per all NY media outlets the Yanks came knocking for Z but the asking price was too high.

Per Hendry, no such discussions took place.

2 Days later Yanks trade Melky to got Big Game Javy?

I think we all know Melky would be a nice fit for the Cubs?

I wish Hendry was honest. Not for the sense of being honest, but sometimes the honest route just makes it much easier.

What would have been wrong with saying, "Yes the Yankees called, but we were not interested."

It would have been over. Now this story will brew all year if Z isn't good.

melky cabrera is just another guy. they better get a lot more than that if they trade z. if they trade z or any of their top players, it better be for very good prospects, not melky cabrera.

i do agree that he would be a good fit with his .330 lifetime OBP. keep him. and keep all the other horseshit people are clamoring for in the outfield such as cameron and podsednik.

Thank you.

I would rather the Cubs do nothing than bring in another worthless guy just to appease the "meatballs" who are clamoring for a move to be made.

That is exactly the way I feel. I would like the Cubs to start filling roster holes with somebody from the farm system. You can always pick up a "retread" type of guy later if needed. I think Marlon Byrd would be a good "add",but if they can't get him,go to the minors.

OK? I don't see where bigfan banged his fist on the counter yelling "We want Melky!"
He did say

What would have been wrong with saying, "Yes the Yankees called, but we were not interested."

Which I agree with.

Of course, Hendry probably just doesn't want tp upset his "ace", who won all of 8 games last year.

How do we know it isn't the NY media pulling this out of their collective butts?

Or maybe the Yankees did call and talked to someone under Hendry (and please get that person out from under Hendry he'll crush him - sorry I know that's mean) and the person never got the message to Hendry because he died laughing at how stupid the idea was.

NEver ever call someone a liar based on anything in the paper that is made up by some bored sportswriter.

And it's even sillier to base the fact the trade discussions happened because the Yankees made another trade involving the same player.

Aren't you the person who wants them to sign Marlon Byrd? He's awful. I'm pretty sure you've never looked at his stats to see how truly bad he is, but let me tell you this, I'd rather have Sam Fuld for league minimum than have to pay Marlon Byrd anything.

absolutely, sam fuld over any of the guys they are talking about bringing in. now is the time to purge large salaries if you can. if they cant trade any of the veterans for young talent, im waiting for these contracts to expire and starting from scratch. part of that is seeing if your young guys can play. fuld this year, maybe vitters in a year or two (if you can move ramirez). i am not adding any salary to this current group.

How many more wins would Melky bring to this team over Sam Fuld? Melky is a not a game changer and neither is Sam Fuld. The Cubs should just stick with what they have and save a few million. You wouldn't want those season tickets increasing again next year for Melky Cabrera, would you?

At least 2-4. That could be the difference between a division title/wild card and missing the playoffs. Fuld is not an everyday player.

Ticket prices are more important than winning?? Really??

Melky Cabrera ≠ winning

let me be the first to say Zambrano has his first "ace" season this year. Can't stand the guy but I just picture him growing up this season if he's healthy.

The sad thing is I don't think Z will ever has his "Ace" season. He's just not an ace.

ill take a stab that fuld can hit .269 with an OBP of .331 (cabreras career averages). if he can't do it, so be it, but id rather give him a chance then give away assets to sign a guy who achieves those kind of numbers year after year.

Cabrera is 24 while Fuld is 28 with 103 career AB's. Giving Fuld significant playing time is a disaster waiting to happen.

perhaps, perhaps not. how can you be sure unless you run him out there? what inside info do you have that tells you this other than the same stats the rest of us can see? i concede that it might not work. my argument is that it is time to find out what some of these guys can do, and start rolling heads of guys who we have watched fail the last 4-5 years. if you prefer to keep the dream alive and keep adding "one more guy" in a desperate attempt to prove that these guys are winners, then here we go again.

Asking for Fuld to play is the same as asking Hasselhoff to play a year ago. They're 4A players with little to no upside. If you want to see what they have then Tyler Colvin should be the guy to play. He's young enough to have some long term value either as an everyday player or a possible trading chip.

not at all true. hoffpauir was a man without a position, and anyone who thought he should replace lee was wrong and anyone who thought he should play outfield was crazy. fuld can play the outfield, and go get them out there. it is a totally different situation. you have a guy who fills the need.

the cubs should not trade colvin under any circumstance right now. there is no rush to get him to the big leagues if you follow my line of thinking. unload this year, start rebuilding next year. perhaps colvin fits into that plan. this year, play some of your young guys to see if they have any value.
