Jorge Soler Ejected in Bench-Clearing Brawl … There May Have Been a Bat Involved
By Brett on April 10, 2013

Chicago Cubs prospect Jorge Soler has been crushing High-A pitching to start the year, and he’s apparently also crushing High-A dugout walls.

Tonight, there was some kind of bench-clearing altercation in the Daytona/Clearwater game that precipitated Soler’s ejection. The details, for now, are of the Twitter-filtered variety (that stream is Josh Timmers), but the gist appears to be: Soler got a bat, and headed toward the Clearwater dugout. He apparently didn’t take any swings at a player, but he did take a swing at the opposing team’s dugout. Like, the dugout, itself.

More details will come in the morning, as I’m sure the Cubs will be forced to respond – plus there will be reports from the scene (and, in the YouTube era, a video somewhere). It seems based on the early take, though, that a suspension is going to be forthcoming. I’d set the over/under at 10 games.

UPDATE: Julio, in the comments, was listening to the game: ”Soler slid hard to break up a DP. The second baseman didn’t like it and said something. They shoved each other. Javy broke it up. Benches cleared, everyone went back to dugout (including Soler). Soler then left the dugout with a bat, walked across the diamond and hit the wall, I believe he only hit it once. The announcers speculated it’d be a week suspension. I’d guess two.”

He made contact. Brett Jackson would have missed the wall.

He has been hitting the shit out of the ball anyways down there. Take a week off. His legend shall only grow from this.

Bi Soler disorder shall be his name from this day forward.

The Cubs need intensity - desperately, so yes I like this.

Not sure if Little Tommy the puss negotiator will approve though...

That's the same question I asked myself. I don't really even like the pic, I mean it's ok and everything, but after the run of avatars you incorporated into your arsenal from my original postings (Zybysko, Urn Anderson).....I was kind of sad to see you using one that wasn't associated with me.

How 'bout a Fandango one? or Ziggler? Give me something to work with.

For years they've bought a ballpark and hope. Now that Ricketts has convinced most of them that the ballpark doesn't matter, hope is all that's left. Hope is what causes fans to be disappointed when Anthony Rizzo turns out to be "just" Adam LaRoche. In fact, if that's the case he will be one of the best position players the Cubs have developed in a long time.

Will you be happy if he's Adam LaRoche? And if he is, do you think that's a championship building block for the 2015 World Series?

If he turns out to be a mid 800's OPS and 25ish home runs a year type player that could absolutely be a building block for a 2015 team.

Although, you would need to get a bit better than average production at some of your other infield spots if that's what your 1B is giving you.

Yes, if he ends up being a starting first baseman who hits 25-30 homeruns and plays good defense, Ill be happy.

I think a first baseman like that is defnitely a nice piece for a championship team.

Well, I'm not knocking LaRoche. He's been a good player. I just don't think he's the kind of guy that you stick in the three or four hole and say, "we're set there". And I don't think that's really what most Cub fans are looking for from Rizzo. I see Castro as Garry Templeton. Another good player. But are these guys you build a team around and are really confident of winning multiple championships?

I'm not trying to go good dolphin on you here. I'm really not. But seriously, if we're now considering Rizzo "a nice piece", haven't expectations been seriously downgraded?

Rizzo might end up being more like Prince Fielder, but Adam LaRoche will be fine.

Gary Templeton was good. Castro will be better, I think.

These are a couple of good players.

The Yankees won 3 titles in 4 years with Tino Martinez and Derek Jeter putting up Templeton in his prime and LaRoche numbers.

It feels like Cub fans cant win with you. If were reasonable with our expectations you say "Not sure you can win multiple championships with those kind of guys"

Who DOES have guys that make Multiple Championships likely?

Castro and Rizzo are both very nice pieces. Add a couple more and you have a nice nucleus.

First of all, I don't think he was a prospect for very long. That discussion would have taken place when he had already played plenty of major league games. Also, I don't really think that was the opinion of many. It was for Terry Boers, which is why they constantly make fun of him about it.

Also, the point is not that the Sox haven't been wrong about young players. It's that the Cubs constantly have 3 or 4 next great players coming up.

Not from me.

Im hoping for Prince Fielder but will settle for LaRoche. I think those are perfect expectations.

I feel like you're applying idiot Cub fans thoughts to thoughtful Cub fans here. I dont think anyone on this board was talking up Rizzo like Stan Musial. Maybe some frat boy jerk off at Murphy's said that, but I didnt. Northside Dan didnt.

So again, Cub fans are screwed with you.

Either the expectations are way too high or not high enough. There is no correct way to do it. It seems.
