I'm in the clubhouse now. Did you know that the existence of rooftops forces us to broadcast our games on a 10-watt daytimer?

“We’re behind Theo and Jed, and we were prepared to lose a lot of money, as we have over time, to stick with them as they build,” deCastro said. Among his proposals to keep the Cubs on WGN were a variety of rights arrangements, revenue-sharing deals on top of guarantees, and even a plan that would have given the Cubs ownership in the station.

But in the end, Kenney and the Cubs went strictly by the numbers, and WGN chose to waive its right to match CBS Radio’s seven-year cash offer.

Ricketts is that desperate for cash?! Kenney is that stupid to not realize what an asset 720 is?! Fuck these bums

This is lose-lose for the Cubs and WGN. Both parties here just suck.

I still remember 3-4 years ago driving by myself to Toronto. I was 30 minutes across the border and was spinning the dial for some talk radio to keep me awake as I had 4 more hours to go. Lo and behold I was able to catch the Cubs crystal clear playing a West Coast game. They sucked but I was so happy.

I realize GN aint what it used to be, either radio or television, but this sure sounds like slaughtering that golden goose. If the hayseeds in Iowa and surrounding states like mine can't hear or see the games, they sure as hell aren't coming to Wrigleyville to pony up for game tix.

This is a terrible allocation of resources in that it takes away valuable news programming from 780 and leaves WGN with more Bob Sirott than anyone can bear. Don't forget that 105.9 is just a simulcast of 780 now because Zimmerman is too cheap to program another station. Radio sucks. It just sucks.

780 goes pretty far too.

780 gets kind of buzzy on a lot of receivers, I've noticed. The sound quality is a step down from 720 and 670, which always sound very good by AM standards, to me, at least. But hey, don't let anything ever stop you from sucking dumb Nebraska cock like you always do. More radio money means you can sell more of your season tickets, right?

This reminds me of the whole Peoria controversy and how Dan was getting so shrill about how "NO ONE CARES ABOUT MARKETING TO PEORIA! MARKET. TO. CHICAGO!", which is great and all except that hey, dipshit, don't you see how many baseball teams successfully market to entire regions? Not only should you not do what the generally successful Cardinals do, you should cede more of your fanbase to the Cardinals themselves. Really smart. I've never seen a team try to decrease its market share like the Cubs have done under this ownership. I guess one White Sox wasn't enough for this town.

you do realize I'm with you on your TV points. I've just always hated WGN radio. And nothing at this point will help me sell more season tickets. What's with the Nebraska comment? They are dumb to ignore Peoria, et al. They should put every game back on the superstation. WGN always sounds whiney to me while 780 comes in clear as a bell out here in the sticks.

Jimmy de Castro & Todd Manley will be on the Steve Cochran Show at 9:10 this morning to discuss the details. Cochran just said that WGN will lose around 6 million dollars this year alone on Cubs broadcasts.

I don't think this decision is really a choice by Ricketts. I read yesterday that WGN made the call to get rid of the Cubs.

As long as Pat Hughes gets re-signed, this does not matter. WGN is a radio station...we're going to be nostalgic for the annoying station break calls?

Agree. If they are going to get more money from 'BBM, why the hell wouldn't they?

Given Rickett's choice to pinch pennies and field a AAA team, WGN exercised their option to end their existing contract. That contract was to broadcast a major league team. From Feder it appears like WGN was trying to negotiate a fair contract but Ricketts took the best cash offer and ran.

I enjoyed how WGN catered to the Cubs. Just like WSCR caters to the White Sox by broadcasting the dreadful White Sox Weekly with Rongey. On WBBM they're second fiddle to the Bears and traffic on the 8's.

WGN Sports is reporting that Pat Hughes & Ron Coomer will remain the radio voices even after this season.

Wonder what this means for Judd Sirott? He most likely stays with WGN Radio Sports? He does a lot with The Blackhawks as well.

I agree, if WBBM is the highest billing station in the market, why would they jeopardize that with Cubs baseball, including a month of exhibition games? I was surprised to see that they only had like 41 million in revenue. Isn't that about on par with Bob Chinn's?

I'm sure WGN would gladly let him move over to CBS if they picked up the 2015 season on his contract. What else would Pat Hughes do on WGN?

I'm not sure why there seems to be confusion on this subject?

Pat Hughes is moving over with the Cubs to WBBM for 2015, as is Ron Coomer. WBBM pays that 2015 salary, and honors the WGN / Pat Hughes / Cubs 2015 contract.

WBBM then negotiates the next Pat Hughes contract. And I'm fairly sure Pat Hughes wants to stick around...but obviously...salary, taking an inning off...stuff like that is also important to Hughes I'm sure.

Exactly.

Cubs opted out early on their WGN deal, didn't like what they were offered and found a better deal.

WGN opted out, not the Cubs. WGN had the right to re-open the contract and did so...and the Cubs had the right to field other offers.

After the Cubs agreed to another offer, WGN retained the right to match it, and chose not to.
