Pretty nice of them to send 5 starters all the way to Maryvale instead of the required 4 for a road game.

Had they not gotten Fowler back, Baez was slated to get a real chance to be the backup CF. Now, when Fowler gets a day off, it's more likely Heyward moves to CF. Baez played CF in winter ball and did a good job there by all reports. But I see him more as an infielder still. He can give Bryant, Russell and Zobrist all a day off each week and fill in, as well as pinch hitting and pinch running. I'm sure he will get time in the outfield as well. He can be the Cubs version of what Zobrist used to be, if everything works out right.

I see that Bum Baez had an error already, can't hit or field..I've said he sucks from day one..Hendry draft picks are a joke, this buster better not make the team.

Can't hit? He hit .289 last season with the Cubs and in the playoffs had a huge HR against the Cardinals. He has exceptional power and would be in the starting lineup on many teams. He can't field? Many scouts regard him as the best SS on the team (I disagree. I think Russell is more steady, even if Baez has the better arm, by far) and probably is the best 3B (But Bryant is the better hitter and there is no room in the outfield anymore) as well. He will be on the team and play an important role off the bench.

Watch him.. Don't repeat what what's been said or written for the last 4 years..watch him play, he's no good, he's looked like a butcher @ SS and he strikes out way too much..his power is not there..I don't give a shit what he did in the pcl, this is the majors and he's looked like dogshit from day 1.

I watch pretty much every game. I like him best at 3rd. (1 error last season .960 fielding pct.) I think he could be really good there, but there is no moving Bryant now, so forget that. At SS, I love his arm, and while in 8 games at SS last season he had a perfect 1.000 fielding pct. I prefer Russell, who is ultra-steady with the ability to make exceptional plays as well. 2B he's fine. It's a great position to hide a weaker fielder and with his arm, he can turn a DP better than most. But Zobrist is going to play there regularly. So it's a utility role he will take on. Fill in to give guys rest in the infield, outfield, pinch hit/ run. But make no mistake, he will be on the team and if an injury crops up, he will get his chance to show he deserves a starting role. if not on this team, on another.

I guess you're not counting the playoffs...

I do think he is a plus fielder, though.

He was good in MLB last year and in MLB playoffs.

Could be just a nice run but you're acting like he's been awful at the MLB level which is not true when speaking of 2015

The Cubs fan in me wants to keep Javier Baez.

The baseball fan in me wants him to get moved to a team where he is an everyday player so he can shut some of you up. He is going to be a good player. .800+ OPS playing good defense at SS, 2B or 3B. Teams would kill for that.

Correct, his fielding stats are from the regular season. Yes, I think he's a plus fielder as well. Last year I said that though I liked Bryant at 3rd, I would actually prefer him in the outfield and Baez at 3rd, as I think Baez is exceptionally good at 3rd and because I want his bat in the lineup. Bryant is fine at 3rd, but Baez has more range and a better arm. Hell, he has the best arm on the team amongst position players along with Soler. Runs very well too. The ceiling on him is one of the highest on the team. He cut way back on the strikeouts last year too. If there is an injury to Russell, Zobrist or Bryant, the Cubs have a very capable backup in Baez. I feel bad for the guy, as he should be starting somewhere. I doubt he will be in this position a year from now. He will either be traded, or moves will be made to make room for him in the starting lineup.

I am ready for Baez to be somewhere else. The last link to Hendry and a player that we don't really need on the team, I don't think he is ever going to figure out the strikeouts and even if he sticks in the league as an everyday player we are going to see Jose Hernandez amounts of K's from him

Bryant strikes out a lot too. Baez actually had a higher batting average and lower K rate in 2015. Power numbers and run production derived from hitters like Bryant and Baez make the strikeouts easier to accept. The big difference between the two, is Bryant is more willing to take walks, so his OBP is higher. But with a .289 batting average and good power, Baez was fine in 2015. Time to let 2014 go. That was when he had bigger issues with strikeouts.

It seems that Baez' floor is the old ex-Cub SS Jose Hernandez. Except that Baez both is a better defender and has more power. Jose Hernandez was a 1.5+ WAR player in five different years, and had 5000 PA in the major leagues over a very long career. He did have an anomaly career year at age 32 that seems a little, um, suspicious, in retrospect.

Still, not an awful floor for Baez. It would be a bit of a bust for a top 10 pick, but not in the Josh Vitters / Joe Borchard realm.

For any of you going to Spring Training who have Hyatt Gold Passport points from work travel or going to Hawaii or something.... People are starting to cancel their more speculative hotel reservations at the Hyatt Place east of the ballpark (about a 1.5 mile walk to home plate). While the cash price is a ridiculous $299/night plus tax, the rooms are available for 8000 Hyatt points. I was able to switch to there instead of having to stay in central Phoenix.
