In a season? Nothing would surprise me. I think he's capable of winning twenty games, but it won't be because he plays on a team that averages .6 runs more per game. It will be because he doesn't make bad pitches in big spots and covers 20 outs in his games rather than 18 or something like that.

I was comparing to Lillys entire run on the Cubs.

I think he's doing well for having to pitch on a .500 team

Before last season he had given up 2 runs or less in 60% of his starts and 3 runs or less in 90% of his starts. He had the worst run support in baseball for like 4 seasons. He wasn't the problem.

He often allows more run support than he receives. That's a problem. And this season he's allowed more run support than he's received in half of his games. That's a problem. You'll see it more clearly in September when he's 12-13 for this Cub juggernaut.

I saw him be the best pitcher on a team that was 5 games back when he arrived last year. He'll build on that. He's a solid #2 in a rotation filled with #2's.

Good luck. I'm not rooting against him. I'm just pretty confident what he will do.

More or less confident than you were that "Cubbie occurrences" would prevent the Cubs from ever winning the World Series?

He's got all his bases covered, Quintana can do no good..he will always be right about him being a bum ass .500 pitcher..even if he isn't.

Fixed.

Well, now he gets to show us who the Cubs are. He already closed out one playoff series for you. Enjoy!

You degrade small sample sizes one minute and then use small sample size the next to try and make a point. :?

You can't have it both ways. Don't we need to wait until his Cub career is over to evaluate his value in the playoffs? That leads us to another question of playoff value vs. regular season value. Which is more important to a team? If a pitcher wins the Cy-Young but cost them a playoff series is he more valuable then the pitcher who goes a little over .500 for his team but clinches key games in the playoffs?

C.Sale closed out a playoff series for the Red Sox last year and no one is saying the Red Sox overpaid for him.

I'll say they overpaid for him. Now let me be clear.....Chris Sale is one of the top 5 pitchers from April through August. But when September rolls around, you can stick a fork in him......he's done. He has blown at least 2 Cy Young awards because of it and the trend continued in Boston last year. I said in 2016 when he got off to an unbelievable start to the season and started the All-Star game, that he would wear down and his ERA would be at least a run to a run and a half higher in the second half and he would not win the Cy Young. That was exactly what happened. He will help a team to win their division (providing it's a good team) and be their ace and dominate till September. But if he's a lesser version of himself when it all matters the most, is he really a guy you want to pitch in the big games?

No. He's a .500 pitcher because he's a .500 pitcher.

Loving his start today, 2 IP, 50+ pitches thrown and 4 ER thus far (and counting!)

8.16 ERA is mediocre?

I know. And if the Cubs were up 10-2, I wouldn't judge the Braves based on it either.

Starting from the Ozzie Albies HR, you knew shit was going to be weird today.

Keep digging for excuses with Quintana. Soon enough you will pull a 180 on him like I did.

Now, the Cubs (on paper) are much better than the Sox with Quintana, but still let me give you from friendly advice. Temper your expectations with Jose Quintana.

He's just not a very good pitcher from what I've seen. He nibbles all the time and doesn't have a consistent "out" pitch. I'm not sure how he put up the numbers he did with the Sox, but he hasn't impressed me at all.

I feel like when Quintana goes out there, it doesn't even matter if he's on or not, the Cubs are going to win that game.

He's transcendent.

Of course they do. They show Quintana to be who he is. If Theo understood how much W/L record matters he never would have traded what he did for him. Now he's got a .500 pitcher. I'm sure that's not what he thought he was getting. But we can discuss it later when it's in the books. I'm sure you'll have another reason why he didn't perform the way you thought he would because you valued K/BB ratio more than W/L record.

I don't care about wins but his 4.80 FIP sucks major dick. Either way the trade sucks for the Cubs.

He has no heart. His other numbers are going to be whatever they need to be to get him to a record that is close to .500. You have a 190 game sample that illustrates that, which is exactly why W/L record matters. Of course, teams can keep giving away the farm for Quintanas and Samardzijas and when they produce the same records they always have guys like Keyser Soze will explain why they are actually better than those records.

His " sample size" with one of the shittiest teams in baseball is skewed.. He's been fine as a cub last year and he will be fine this year.. Every year away from the Sox will tell a different story.
