That is true. Just contending for a playoff spot is no longer a big deal. We expect that much and more. Sustained excellence was the goal and there is no reason to think they will not be right back in the thick of it again, with a real chance to win another title.

Gordon Wittenmyer made it sound like Maddon is pissed about his guy Chili Davis getting fired. He should probably read the writing on the wall and quit.

I am confused. On the score this morning I thought I heard their guest say Davis was Theo's guy? Adding that Joe doesn't think much about batting coaches. Might have been Gammons?

Gammons said Theo and Wittenmyer was positive it was Maddon's guy. Made it sound like they were intentionally making Maddon uncomfortable.

Gammons is a fan like anyome else, nothing more.

Hitting Coaches usually don't matter....unless they talk that hitters out of a technique that has great success....which Chili did.

Agreed but in the end they also won as many games basically as past few years with Chilli.

Joe's message to the team and overall philosphy this year is what needs to go because I really dont think you can fix it. This idea that failure is fine, losing is fine...because in the end the talent will show through is nothing but an excuse. What you do and say to encourage and develop confidence in young players is NOT what you should be doing with veterans that have experienced success. That message should have changed the day after the WS ended. What created a culture of winning with young players has now created a culture that is full of excuses and lacks accountability.

Theo has to spend even more to get out of the whole he's dug. It will be interesting to to see if he signs more free agent failures who are dead money to add to the mess.

That's why Girardi allegedly pulled out of interviews.

Yeah I heard about turning down Reds but not others. Anyway it sounds like the thing to do but he seems to be more likely than Maddon to disobey Theo and the stats guys.

I don't think you can go by stats exclusively. You need a gut/feel guy. Girardi is that guy and he's been successful.

When I heard Maddon wasn't getting an extension, Girardi was the first name I thought about.

Girardi will have the pick of the litter of any team that wants him.

I think it is a given that he wants back in the game and at the very least has the top three teams he would skipper in his head.

Now it's just a matter of a phone call.

With or without Harper, let’s say the Cubs win the World Series next season. You don’t let Maddon go do you? Or can you play it off like it’s a mutual thing?

Right...like Dusty and every other Cub manager that failed.

Girardi is about as anti-metrics as they come. Basically, it's like Joe Orr managing your team.

Maddon is a better manager. He's not going anywhere.
