INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- The Cubs are interested in adding Korean left-hander Hyun-jin Ryu to their starting rotation for at least the next few years.

Major League Baseball sources confirmed that the Cubs were among the teams who entered a bid for Ryu before Thursday's 4 p.m. Central deadline. He has been posted by the Hanwha Eagles in the Korean Baseball Organization, and the Eagles now have four business days to determine if they are going to accept the highest of the sealed bids, which they have been forwarded by MLB.

Ryu, 25, is represented by Scott Boras. If the Eagles accept the bid, the team making it will have 30 days to sign him. If a deal cannot be reached, no money would change hands and Ryu would remain property of the Eagles.

According to scouts, Ryu throws in the low-90s and has a plus changeup, a skill set that compares favorably to 27-year-old Wei-Yin Chen, the Taiwanese left-hander who went 12-11 for Baltimore last season. He has averaged 181 innings a season in the KBO, leading the league in strikeouts five times. He was a major contributor to the Korean team that won a gold medal in the 2008 Olympics and finished second in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

It is not known how many other teams bid for Ryu.

The Cubs are going full gangham!! Hell yes.

Clubs suspect that the Dodgers won the bidding for Hyun-jin Ryu with a bid of $25.7M. Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports report that the Dodgers did in fact submit an aggressive bid.

The Dodgers fire sale is going to be epic.

Scott Baker signs one year deal w/ Cubs $5.5 mil plus incentives. That seems a bit high, but I'll still take it.

If it gets to the point the Cubs are paying incentives, it probably means he is playing well. Which means they will trade his ass at the deadline for a prospect. So, the $ will be worth it.

The Chicago Cubs signed rehabbing right-hander Scott Baker to a one-year, $5.5 million deal on Tuesday,

Baker, who missed the 2012 season after undergoing elbow reconstruction surgery, went 8-6 with a 3.14 earned-run average in 23 starts with Minnesota in 2011, The 31-year-old is 63-48 over his seven year career with Minnesota, with a 4.15 earned-run average.

Baker can earn another $1.5 million in incentives.

The move was the first off-season signing for the Cubs, and fills one of the rotation openings left vacant by the departures of Justin Germano and Jason Berken.

This is an excellent move that is right in line with the Maholm signing last season.

As long as he is healthy. They need about 3-4 more middling SP to have some depth.

Had a pretty solid year as a backup for the Reds last year. Want to see the terms, but first impression is not bad.

Good glove, no hit. He was a big prospect who never really met his potential. I'm wondering why, in a year with little potential, they wouldn't just go with Clevenger or someone like Koyie Hill as the backup for the minimum.

I'm sure the Cubs will want to keep Clevenger and Castillo catching everyday which would require one of them to be in AAA at all times.

It seems like this is the Cub fan end game to every FA signing they make this year.

Dioneer Navarro gets you a single A non prospect in return and you might even have to send some money.

Ah, OK?

Report: Cubs Courting Top Japanese Reliever Kyuji Fujikawa
By Brett on November 18, 2012

The Chicago Cubs continue to surprise (dare I use the “think outside the box” cliche?) this offseason in the players they pursue. It started with Dan Haren, whom no one outside of this place expected the Cubs to pursue, and now it’s a top Japanese reliever.

Kyuji Fujikawa is a free agent after dominating in Japan for a number of years as one of the top relievers in the NPB. He’s been on a tour of the States in the last week, and, according to the Dallas Morning News, one of his stops was Chicago to meet with the Cubs. Among the other teams believed to have interest, and with whom Fujikawa has met or will meet with, are the Diamondbacks, Dodgers (grumble), and Angels, among others.

Fujikawa, 32, throws in the mid-90s and has been putting up stupid good numbers in the NPB for a decade now. Heck, he hasn’t had an ERA over 2.01 since 2004 (when it was, gasp, 2.61). His K-rate is typically in the 12 per 9 range, with a walk rate of about 2.3 per 9. Really the only negative to which you could point is the fact that his innings pitched have declined of late, from 83 in 2007 to 57.2 in 2009 to 51 in 2011 to 47.2 last year.

At first blush, Fujikawa seems like an odd target for a team like the Cubs. Top-line relievers tend to be one of the last pieces you add to a competitive team, not one of the first pieces you add to a rebuilding club. At 32, he’s not likely to be a major component of the next great Cubs team.

On the other hand, the international market remains an area where teams with extra cash can try and find undervalued assets, so perhaps that’s the most appropriate lens through which view the pursuit of a player like Fujikawa. You can bet his agent will be warning him about the possibility of being viewed solely as a flippable piece, though. I could be wrong on this, but I’ve always had the impression, anecdotally, that Japanese players coming over to play in MLB prefer to know where they’re going to be for a set amount of time, and then stay there. In other words, the “opportunity” to be dealt to a contender at the deadline is not likely to appeal to Fujikawa in the same way that it might appeal to some State-side players.

Further, the Cubs might view Fujikawa as a closer in MLB, and, with the suspected departure of Carlos Marmol via trade this offseason, Fujikawa could take over that role in 2013 (building even more value).

The 40-man roster has to be set today and the Cubs will have more difficult decisions to make. I believe they are at 39 players on the 40-man and there are 5 players who could warrant protection from the rule 5 draft. They will also want to leave 1 spot open to draft a rule 5 player.

Logan Watkins
Carlos Villanueva
Nick Struck
Dae-Eun Rhee
Trey McNutt

Stewart, LaHair, Bowden, Vitters, Ceasar, and Concepcion are all players who could be removed from the 40-man roster to make room for the rule 5 draft eligible players.

Cubs get Double A starter Barret Loux from Texas for Jake Brigham, injured pitcher they got from Rangers in Soto deal.

The Cubs have designated Bryan LaHair for assignment, according to a club press release. The team and LaHair are "pursuing an opportunity" for LaHair to sign with a Japanese team.

LaHair had a peculiar 2012 season, beginning the campaign as Chicago's regular first baseman and breaking out to 12 homers and a .988 OPS over his first 51 games. This hot start was enough for LaHair to make the NL All-Star team, though he cooled off considerably after May and ended up on the bench as Anthony Rizzo took over at first and the Cubs had too many other options in the outfield. LaHair finished 2012 with a .259/.334/.450 line and 16 homers in 380 plate appearances with almost all of that damage coming against right-handed pitching --- the left-handed hitting LaHair had an .865 OPS against righties and a .292 OPS against southpaws.

Nice pick up. 6'5" kid that was 14-1 in 25 starts this past year.
