It would be nice if this pathetic team made some kind of move. So far this offseason they aquired a terrible hitting catcher and a somewhat mediocre lhrp.

I don't think the D'Bags are a player for Samardzija anymore either but Kevin Towers hasn't done anything stupid yet today so who knows. The team to keep an eye on is Toronto. They're in the market for pitching and have been surprisingly quite this off season. Atlanta and Baltimore could be players too.

Come on, you didn't hear the news?? They won the bidding war for former Royals reliever Tommy Hottovy!!!

That move alone puts them in 66 win territory!!!! Fanboy really stepped up big time here!!!!!

The Cubs have claimed right-hander Liam Hendriks off waivers from the Twins, reports La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star Tribune (on Twitter). Hendriks had been designated for assignment last week to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Phil Hughes.

Hendriks, still just 24 years old, makes for a nice buy-low option for the Cubs. The 25-year-old ranked sixth and seventh on the Baseball America's Top 10 Twins prospects lists from 2010-11 and has a solid minor league history. The Australian righty has a 3.61 ERA with 6.2 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9 in 254 career innings at Triple-A and a career 2.99 ERA in the minors as a whole.

Hendriks has been unable to put it together in three Major League stints, however, as evidenced by his bloated 6.06 ERA in 156 innings. He's averaged 5.8 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 in those 156 frames to go along with a below-average 40.4 percent ground-ball rate. Hendriks barely averages better than 90 mph on his fastball, leading to too much hard contact when it's in the zone, as evidenced by a 23.3 percent line-drive rate from his opponents that has helped bloat his career BABIP to .330.

In their most recent write-up of Hendriks (prior to the 2011 campaign), Baseball America noted that Hendriks had the ceiling of a No. 3 starter if he could continue to keep his fastball down in the zone to pair with a solid slider and above-average changeup.

I believe 5'7" is the limit to still be a midget, 5'.8" a dwarf and anything at or above 5'8" AND a HALF is normal.

Tatt Man!!!!!! Roberts was aight with Arizona IIRC. Better than some of the crap they have had in the past.

So with Tatt Man, Ruggiano, (and now.......), Ryan Kalish and John Baker, the Cubs have a bunch of 3A guys and a utility guy all with camp invites hoping they become the next roster buster like Bogusevic.

Hell of a haul!!!!! Some of the key parts of the rebuild are going to retire before this thing ever gains traction. I tell you what though....they are going to have one sick ass AAA team this year. PCL Championship!!!!!!!!

Now that Robinson Cano has been inked by the Mariners and Omar Infante has been snared by the Royals, the Yankees may look to swing a trade for Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney, tweets Bruce Levine of 670 The Score in Chicago.

Barney, age 28, is coming off a 2013 season in which he batted .208/.266/.303 in 141 games for the Cubs. For his career, he owns an OPS+ of 71 across parts of four major-league seasons.

While Barney is obviously not much of a hitter, he does grade out as a substantial defensive asset at second base. In 2012, he was awarded a Gold Glove, and according to Ultimate Zone Rating Barney's defense over the last two seasons have been worth about three wins by itself.

Presumably, the Cubs would be willing to part with him as part of their ongoing rebuilding process. Barney is presently first-year arbitration-eligible but not slated for free agency until after the 2016 season.

What would he even be worth to them? Too bad they can't dump Russell and him for Gardner. Throw in a mid level Jae Hoon Ha or something as a sweetener.

There are some weird rumors out there about a 5 year 55 mil extension for Shark. That is absurdly cheap. It came from the ND basketball announcer so it is probably total BS.

NYY GM to the fans of NY, "We where not able to sign Cano (Fans boo loudly) and we lost Infante to the Royals (fans start digging up old george to see if he flipped in his grave), but don't worry NY. We are working out a trade for D.Barney! (fan yells, "but he can't hit!) No, no he can't , but he can field. look at it like the glass is half full! At least you can still get your big gulps in NY! See, things are not so bad. Next we are going after a closer that can't close, but he is a hell of a bunter.

Why would anyone trade anything for a player that can't hit?

A pitchers hit NL 4.20 ERA and 1.35 WHIP is worth more than 11$ mil a season?

That would be his prime as he got started later with pro ball due to his collegiate football days. I think he is a solid #2 or 3 starter for those 5 years so ya I would pay him that and be very happy about it.

If they do it this off-season, they'd be buying out a 2 or 3 seasons of Samardzija's arb eligibility. That could explain the ostensible discount overall. Doubt Shark gets $11 mil in arb.

As much as I dislike Shark, I'd be ok with that deal . Do I think he's worth 11 million a year? no but that seems to be about what just decent pitchers make nowadays .

I've seen the 5/55M deal floated out there as their current offer for awhile now. Gotta be tough to turn down that kind of coin, undermarket or not.

It does seem like a good deal. I thought he was asking for $20 million per year. That is a huge reduction by his group.

Iirc, Dakich just said the Cubs should sign him for that (he's a big Cubs fan). I think he either chose his words poorly, or was misunderstood. That said, if that's the deal they end up, I'd be pretty happy. I think Shark will want more.

Do Theo and Jed have secret information about a new minor league level being added? They sure as shit have the market cornered on 4A players. Now they are looking at Jonathon Sanchez and Tsuyoshi Wada....both on minor league contracts of course. These guys are giving every indication that for yet another year they are going to bring in a bunch of guys no one else wants that have some big league experience and see which ones can be lightening in a bottle. Very aggressive off season boys!!!! I realized they wouldn't go after any big names but good christ...there have to be some better low cost guys than this shit.

I hope they aren't envisioning him in save situations. Probably won't get a lot of work. Looks like a perfect trade deadline guy.
