That would depend on whether or not he is a witch.

This was a game I figured they might drop with Oswalt facing Dempster-fresh off the D.L. But when Oswalt left in the 2nd inning, it looked like the Cubs might catch a break. Oh well, try to get 3 of 4 now. That would be real nice.

I know that the Lilly injury kind of pressed Dempster back into service but considering he hadn't pitched in a month it might have been nice for him to maybe take a rehab start to find his location again. He looked absolutely terrible last night. I don't know he looks sweaty and uncomfortable on the mound and why the hell is he wearing a long sleeve shirt on an 80 degree day. Friggin canadians.....

I think it's safe to say that Soriano is finally approaching a hot streak. Another homer today to give the Cubs a 6-0 lead in the first inning.

Thank God for Mike Hampton.

I heard yesterday that they had made an adjustment on Soriano's swing, where he is not lifting his foot as high off the ground and it's helping him a lot. Nice to get a decent lead early. i hope they can really stress that Astro bullpen, so they are worn out before the finale tomorrow.

There seems to be a definite improvement in Soriano's at bats.
I think the Cubs will tax the Astros bullpen, starting now and I think that bodes well for 3 out of 4.
I'd take that.

He certainly is. When he gets hot, he is more productive than Soriano on a hotstreak because Ramirez drives in runs by the bunches. Maybe Soriano will too as he is hitting lower in the order now. Lou should have made this move 2 years ago.

How are they gonna stress the bullpen? The game is a blow out they will run Hampton out there for BP until he gets 100+ pitches and 6+ innings. After that they bring another guy in for the last 2 or 3 IP. This was the best result to get a rest for your bullpen. Now hopefully we can do the same with Wells.

Necroscope - I think that if the score stayed 6-0 they would have liked to keep Hampton out there, but then Cooper also wanted to make a run at this game as well and when the score started getting out of hand, I think he had to change - which is a good thing for us - get in that bullpen, tire em out and hopefully Wells can go seven and give our pen a rest.

How are they gonna stress the bullpen....by shellacking Hampton to the point where he only went 4 innings and they had to go to the bullpen. Cooper isn't going to just leave a guy like Hampton out there when he's getting tattooed. This sets things up well for game 4, if they can get into this bullpen that's had to endure a 13 inning game, a start in game 2 that lasted just 1 2/3 innings and a start that went just 4 innings.

That's what I was saying when they signed this guy, nothing hire then 5th in the order.
All this BS,it doesn't matter 5th or 1st. Yeah,right...that's why guys batting leadoff usually have low RBI totals.

Outstanding performance by Wells today.

Couple more outings like this and I am going to start becoming a believer in the kid.

I would like to think the same thing, but I will again never trust a rookie starter's numbers. How many pitchers just recently have had amazing rookie seasons that they never lived up to?

I just like how Wells throws strikes and gets ground balls. Doesn't mess around trying to strike people out. He pitches like a veteran even though he is a rookie.

Tricky - probably more than I care to count and don't have to look much past the Jeff Samardzija hype.

But he has had a lot of quality starts and keeps the ball low in the zone and gets a lot of groundballs. These are hopeful things - not saying he is the next Zambrano or anything, but no reason to think he can't be a solid 3rd or 4th starter.

This is the perfect spot to use Heilman. Even HE can't give up an 11 run lead...

Can he?

The Astros blow. We should have gotten a sweep, once Oswalt went out.

I am not really arguing with your logic. But the Cubs have been playing well for the first time all year maybe take a minute to smell the roses and enjoy the first place Cubs for a day or two before the other shoe drops? Just a thought.

Keep proving me wrong boys. The rare laugher provided by having to leave a pitcher out there who obviously didn't have it today. Happy coincidence for the Cubs to come out on top of that scenario. Win tomorrow and keep the good times rolling. 8)

Wells provides a well needed blow for the bullpen today. Huge. They were worn out. Everyone got a nice day off today. Well, except for that Atkins dude.
