Just a guess:

Cubs wanted Ramirez in the deal. Didn't like his medical. Want to see how he heals, etc. If he doesn't, they get two other guys instead.

Exactly. I would be interested to see what the deal was that they nixed. I am pretty sure Jackson was never in the deal so it sounds like they added Grimm, kept basically the same deal with an escape clause and got another throw in...........and didn't have to give up Russell. Patience was rewarded handsomely it seems.

Great point, they didn't have to give up any other trade pieces.

They can flip Russell. He has sucked lately. Sell now on him...!

We'll see. What I'd like to know is what the Cubs offered Garza extension wise. If they offered 4/52 for example and he said no, then moving him would make sense. But if they only offered 3/36, then you gotta wonder if they feel he is that much of an injury risk because guys in their early 30's (when the Cubs should be in the race) that project as solid 2/3 starters are nearly impossible to find unless they are going to shell out 15M+ per annum.

If Garza stays healthy, I predict he receives 5/82.5.

Very well could happen. He may very well prove worthy of that contract too and if so, the Cubs will look back and regret the decision not to pay him.

They have Rosscup just sitting there in AA waiting. They can also probably try out Rusin or Raley as a specialist as neither will ever be a long term big league starter for this organization. Gotta keep Shark happy though as I think Russel is his boy so he may have to stay for now.

Just talked to a buddy of mine who lives in Texas and is a huge Rangers fan. He keeps up with all their minor league stuff, and he is pissed they did this deal. He says the Cubs got too much for a rental.

Wooooooooo Cubs win.

@PWSullivan: Hoyer: Olt will get majority of time at 3B over Vitters at Iowa. Vitters can "play a lot of outfield."

A half-blind hitter, a low A pitcher, a bad major league pitcher, and 2 players to be named later.

Theo is a genius.

@PWSullivan: Hoyer says Olt will not mean anything as far as Bryant starting at third in minors.

Always wondered what effect his injuries would have on the Cubs. Cost them:

@Evan_P_Grant: Cubs had to accept Grimm instead of Odor after Rangers raised issues about Garza's elbow.

Bryant is going to the OF in time regardless of whether Olt is there or not. I just hope they get him out there a little sooner than they did with Lake.

Bryant better be real. He seemed like kind of a choir boy type when interviewed. I want ballplayers, not poster boys who suck.

You know Shark is pissed they traded Garza. Both guys want to win big time and say what you want about the future, they gave up a 29 YO 2/3 starter for a bunch of maybe's.

Shark already turned down 1 extension and he may very well want to win bad enough to say fuck the Cubs and bolt once his contract is up unless they assemble a roster with a legit chance to win it all in the next couple years.

No one cares what you want. :)

All I care about is that the kid can play, but these take him home to Mommy white boys scare me.

Give me the Dick "Dirt" Tidrow's and Dennis Farina's (R.I.P) of the world.

I like Olt. He's a solid ballplayer and a change of scenery could really do him some good. He's a pretty good defensive third baseman with a strong arm so that should help keep him in the lineup if he struggles a bit offensively.

CJ Edwards is interesting but he has a LONG way to go. He kind of reminds me of Trey McNutt (the greatest 32nd round draft pick ever) who dominated the low minors but hit a brick wall in Double A.

Grimm is a back of the rotation starter.

I still think they should have signed Garza to an extension.

Just looked at Grimm's stats this year. In his last 10 starts for the Rangers, he's had 2 quality starts and has been shelled in 7 of them. No wonder they wanted a PTBNL (or a choice of 2).

Ouch.

They moved him through the system real fast and he was only up to eat innings. Keep in mind Feldman looked that bad for them last year as well.

Same things were said when they got Travis Wood.

I like the pickup. The kid has had some growing pains so far in the majors, but there is potential there.

I was wrong on Wood so hopefully this kid isn't Chris Volstad II.

Wood was a major league ready 5th starter, doubt this kid is there right now.

Olt is actually hitting .290 with a .360ish OBP since going to the eyedrops.

I'd copy and paste some sources, but for some reason Texas Leaguers MiLB site isn't working for me right now...

Olt saw straight enough to crush to I-Cub pitches over the fence this past weekend. He was MVP of that series.

I'm going to guess that at least one of the 4 or 5 players the Cubs will receive will have a better chance to succeed than the sandwich pick they get in next year's draft.

Like I said in my much earlier text, he really struggled early in the season after getting hit in the head with a pitch in the Dominican winter league. His right eye is unable to produce tears anymore, but since he began using eye drops for the problem (a month ago) he has done much better. He was considered the Rangers #1 prospect until the concussion he suffered in the Dominican adversely affected his performances both in the field and at bat. Hopefully, those issues are resolved and the Cubs got themselves a steal.

Better than the sandwich pick they would have gotten. No one gets a sandwich pick now.

If they made a qualifying offer they would get a pick. He would have been their guy.
