Going back to the play where Rizzo let the bunt drop, IIRC Len and Jim eventually said the runner on first base only choice was to go to second base on the play, and that he would have been out if he had stayed at first.

Hypothetical scenario, on that play if the runner went immediately back to first base and Rizzo touched first base first then tagged the runner standing on first base is the runner safe? Since Rizzo touched the base first, the batter is out and the runner no longer has to go to second base.

However if Rizzo tags the runner first and then touches first base then it is a double play because the runner must vacate first base since the batter is entitled to first (since he is not been called out). Am I missing something?

I believe if Rizzo had tagged the runner standing on first prior to Rizzo touching the base, the runner is out and then Rizzo could get the DP by touching the base. If he touched the base first, I think the runner could stay there. It was just a unique circumstance that there was almost certainly going to be a DP thanks to Rizzo's quick thinking.

I could see a scenario where BZ was supposed to quit baseball so the wife could concentrate on her singing. BZ kinda broke that promise by continuing to play longer than they had agreed he would quit baseball. Now, he is having to back pedal and may have to quit. Just a thought.
