I figured Rizzos WAR would be higher because of Defense (which makes WAR not as good IMO

I was surprised by the OPS+ though
At this point, let's just go with the fact that Abreu was named the AL player of the month.

Ok. I like Abreu. Just posting the current stats
Sounds like Rizzo was robbed of NL player of the month then.

No, Tulo has been the best player in baseball. No one was beating him for that prestigious award

Abreu is off to a great start. I'm sorry it bothers you that Rizzo's stats are better but who cares advanced stats are all bullshit right?

Don't get all emotional. I've only been back for a few hours. You'll have a nervous breakdown if you are already like this.

OK, ignore all stats going forward other than player of the month. Sounds good.

If Rizzo wins a player of the month award, I'll have no problem saying he had a better month.

Emotional? I believe advanced stats are the opposite of emotional

I made one post citing stats without comment and you replied, emotionally, in a matter of minutes.

I'm sorry that certain numbers don't jibe with your conclusion. Its OK. You can still enjoy Abreu. I do.

I feel like Sox fans should know better after the Gordon Beckham experience. I thought they're skeptical and cynical and expect the worse? Why are they already giving him the MVP for 2014?

I don't know where I said anything negative about the numbers.

Don't go all Elmhurst Steve on us here.

Just the MVP for the month as per the description of the award. Maybe Rizzo can catch him eventually.

Well, I tried to compliment him too, but you didn't seem to like that.

Pace yourself. Abreu may not win player of the month for May and then you can gloat.

Gonna argue 149 is greater than 153 now?

1st basement who hit 3rd and 4th in their respective lineups should be judged on HRs, RBI, R, even slugging.

As I said, take the guy with a higher WAR. I'll take the third place hitter who is leading the league in HRs and RBI.

This is hilarious.

Sox fans can't have anything nice. Abreu had a great month, probably better than any sox fan expected but here they are arguing that a Cubs player with better stats is not as good

That's Soxy to the bone

Also trying to project their emotions and need to gloat onto Cubs fans

Hooray Baseball!!!

As I said, I'm thoroughly enjoying both players. I wish you guys could join me.

They are relative to different leagues. I believe pitchers' at-bats are included in Rizzo's (NL) comparison, no?

OK, you can take whoever you want. 153>149

Also, I'm a guy who appreciates power hitters with lower ba's (.258) but I'm pretty sure I've seen you ex toll the virtues of BA , right?

I'd agree on your stats except RBI, that's just way too department on others. Even BA with RISP is better

We are just giving Steve Stone credit for his GREAT prediction. This thread was made to laugh at Stone because of how stupid he will look.

Listen, Rizzo is a pretty good player too. No one is bashing him.

Jason Kipnis was an AL player of the month last year. .234 and the DL this year.

Tell Rick he thinks Abreu's player of the month is relevant to comparing with Rizzo.

Assuming we take BRicks characterization of Rizzo as Pretty Good, then AB-reu needs to have a GREAT HOF career for Stone to make one FAR SUPERIOR to the other one.

Personally, I think BRick calling Rizzo "Pretty Good" ruins his own attempt at proving Stone correct.

But, if it gets IMU all riled up, it might serve its purpose.

No one s bashing anyone. They are both off to great starts. People are getting mad at stats though.

Like I said, if you or Frank believe traditional stats are better, that's fine. I have no issue with that.

Their are numbers that suggest Rizzo has been better. That's all I'm saying.

Cool.

There are more numbers-- and awards-- that suggest Abreu has been better.

I don't think it adjusts for park very well though.

I'm not criticizing Rizzo, just pointing out that 149 is quite possibly better than 153, depending on the relative strength of the hitters in each respective league.

I truly believe its too close to call

Its real hard to put the defense of a first baseman into context

I'll say this, advanced stats guys (and Joey Votto) would say Rizzo, old school guys would say Abreu. I think as per usual the answer lies in the middle

One of these guys will have a long slump and the other will pull away and that will decide who is better for the year

I think Rizzo is more likely to have the slump. Hope I'm wrong

Yeah and dWAR is fucked up.

Too early to call. Both very good
