they spent a decent clip of $$$ last year, the problem is that it was bad money. Even without naming yu darvish specifically your first 3 starting pitchers have a combined age of over 100. That's likely gonna be problematic going forward cuz just imagine how bad this can get if Lester gets hurt and/or hamels runs out of magic pixie dust. Spahn and Sain and pray for rain? Darvish and Hamels and hope Noah got the camels.

did pecota have the cubs falling off a cliff? it's a bit late to say it now, but going into the year I was thinking this could be a long awful year for the Cubs cuz I just don't see them having the pitching to go out and win 90+ games again. You've got an aging lester, Hendricks, and then a hope (hamels) and a prayer (darvish) and then *farting/sharting noise*

At this time last year at least you could be encouraged by the fact that Chatwood wasn't getting hit yet and Darvish had yet to become the scary albatross that he certainly seems to be. Add in that Carl Edwards looks cooked and Morrow is definitely maybe at best and then it's like "holy shit do the cubs even have any pitching depth?"

PLUS now your young position players you realistically coulda tried to flip for pitching (russell, happ, contreras, etc) are all various levels of exposed and uhhh.... Hey 2016 amirite?

for what? He knows the Heyward signing sucks. He knows the Darvish signing looks like shit thus far (I still have hope). And he knows they should’ve drafted capable major league arms through the years. I’d rather have Bryce Harper than Heyward and better bullpen arms but it is what it is. Their payroll drops down $60 or $70 million next season. Rickets didn’t want to pay a tiny tax this year.
