Also, has anyone watched one minute of Marquee after the Cubs season ended? So far it seems like all paid programming with an occasional Cubs replay. Not a good first year for the network.

I get that. This COVID shit has fucked Tom more than any other MLB owner. Cuz he invested in the ball park and real estate around the ball park. Taking out loans thinking in could be paid back fast with the crowds coming to Wrigley for 81 games and even when they're on the road.

Now he's gonna have 2 straight years with no crowds.

Even when everybody gets the vaccine I think less people are going to be hanging out in big crowds for at least 2 more years.

And your right, that TV network is probably not the money maker he thought it was gonna be.

I just find it funny that the San Diego Padres are rich while the Chicago Cubs are poor.

Who would have thought that could happen?

By leaving WGN, both on radio and TV, the Cubs sacrificed their charm.

Now that Theo is gone and they will be dumping players, it will be an uphill battle to get that back.

When the CoronaNoia subsides, they will retain the charm of attending a game in person at the old antique stadium in the heart of the city, but the broadcast wing of that comfortable feeling will be long gone.

So many people in so many places effortlessly tuned in to WGN, which was the same as TNT or TBS in that it was included in the very most basic cable packages like it was a local channel.

If you live outside the Cubs market territory, you have to watch Cubs games via MLB.TV or MLB Extra Innings, which I do not believe are a part of basic packages.

Yeah. But they haven't been on WGN nationally for years. I want to say the national Cubs games on WGN ended 10 years ago. Maybe 15. That was an MLB rule. Same with the Braves on TBS. Same with the White SOX on WGN, actually. Those used to be national as well.

So the WGN games have only been on in the Chicago market for the last 10-15 years.

When I was a kid, on vacation in some hotel, my Dad used to always ask me to see if the TV has WGN. Cuz we wanted to get a game. So we're in Kentucky or California watching a Cubs or Sox game. When I was a kid I thought it was cool to get the local broadcast in other states.

National WGN game broadcasts stopped after 2014.

Ok. Fine. But I'm saying at this point them leaving WGN doesn't matter since they weren't on nationally anymore.

Unless you want to make the case that people without cable don't get the Cubs anymore in Chicago. But that's a small percentage. And they were only on WGN for like 35 games or so.

They went to cable in the 90s for the majority of their games. Back in the 80s and before, all the Cubs games were on WGN.

The biggest reason people who do not live on the North Side or in Iowa are Cub fans - that I hear, at least - is, "When I came home from school they were on TV".

As time goes on, they will be just another team wearing blue.

thats right. the superstation made a generation of cub fans that would never would have been cub fans. the superstation stretched all the way up from Canada down to South America and as wast as Hawaii/Japan/Taiwan and east to some parts of Europe.

Now w/ Marquee they limited everything down so future cub fans are only going to be from Chicago. These guys have been living off of that 1984 season, Harry Carey, and WGN the super station for nearly 40 years. That gravy train is going to soon end.

Yes. My point is they left WGN for the majority of their games in the 1990s. It's been this way for the people in Iowa for a long time. It didn't start when they went to Marque. The vast majority of their games have been on cable for 3 decades.

It's easy enough to watch the Cubs if you don't live near Chicago. $130/year and you don't have to have cable. MLB blacks out some teams and in some parts of the country like Vegas it's excessive. Also, the national weekend games are blacked out. Buy a $40 Roku and connect it to your WiFi and TV set, and it's all good. The biggest issue is that it's usually about a minute behind, so you can't be in any chat rooms or have notifications set on your phone.
