Cubs fight back to tie it at 2, and then the first pitch of the next inning Marquis gives up a homer to Lee. He did this basically every start last year in the 2nd half. For a sinker ball pitcher, he leaves way to many pitchs waist high. Hendry really needs to find a way to get rid of his bad contract.

Horrible decision by Marquis to try and tag up, and then he comes out and gets blasted around. Typical Marquis start.

Fukudome does everything. Unbelievable bunt single earlier in the game.

It is a real pleasure to watch a professional hitter like Fukudome work a count, get his cuts on the pitches he wants. He is fun to watch hit.

I couldn't agree more, Doc. It is refreshing.
We can only hope some of the baseball retarded mopes on this roster will watch and learn something from him about how to approach an at bat.
Nice win today, Big Z needs to get them to .500 tomorrow.

Like last year and the one thing that will make me a nervous wreck is that this team will rarely have a blow out win. Kerry has come back strong in his lat 2 apperances, nice to see. Trying to stay positive.

Maybe Soriano and Howry should stay in extended spring training, since they have been pretty much useless the last two years in April.

Howry needs to be moved out of the set up role for now. Use Marmol in the eight, Wuertz or even Hart for the sixth/seventh. When June come around and Howry gets his velocity back you can put him back in his normal role.

And I know most people feel like Fukodome should be hitting number two, but I love him in the fifth spot. Coming up with men in scoring position like in the seventh. Gotta love his patience and how he uses the whole field. And a perfect bunt and a nice defensive play I beleive in the 5th where he ran to his right and made a nice running catch that prevented a big inning.

Today was an example of why having Marmol as a set up man is the right move. Marmol came in during the middle of an inning with the tying run on base and retired the next two batters.

Wood comes in the ninth, no one on base and a two run lead.

The set up role many times is the more difficult/demanding role and Marmol is more equipped for this role than Wood.

right on, i could not possibly agree with you more. that is the way it is supposed to work, except for howry getting touched up again. i feel real good about marmol and wood.

The cubs had been showing some bonceback this year. They DID come back in a couple of their losses. THe offense is gonn produce.
Wood looks solid as a closer, Fuk is much better that I had hoped he would be.
Yeah, I still feel good about this team. Too bad parkridgesteph already jumped off the ledge.

why do they have the real men of genius in the booth, turned it back from the NBA game and they were doing their schtik?

love the bit but is this the appropriate time?

game note, our left and right fielders have dynamite arms.

Because Bud Light is a Cubs sponsor. That's why.

I know that but do they normally disrupt the broadcast?

Yeah - aren't the disruptions of Cubs games usually done by Santo??

Agree, to illustrate this scenario, i looked up some numbers on a young reliever brought up and eased into the bullpen in a setup role for a team that had a veteran closer. Look at these eye-popping numbers, this was his first full year in the majors:

8-3 w-l
61 gp
14 gf
5 sv
107.7 ip
73 h
34 bb
130 so
2.09 era
0.994 whip

... and largely due to his yeoman work in the 7th and 8th, the closer went on to have 43 saves. Talk radio and sportswriters that year were constantly calling for the manager to put the rookie into the ninth inning. In no small part because of this careful handling early in his career, said phenom went forward the next season to become one of the greatest closers in the history of the game.

Who is this guy? Mariano Rivera. The closer that year was John Wetteland.

I know it still somewhat early in the game, but I would have had Ward pinch hit for Theriot. You can break open the game and I don't think Houston had any lefties warmed up in the bullpen.

Missed opportunity

I know this is a little late, but the Cubs have 2 solid arms on the corners in the outfield. Soriano throws Bourn out in the 1st at home, and Fukudome throws a bullet to the plate to keep a man at 3rd. When Pie plays, he has a solid arm also. Now if only Soriano and Pie could start hitting.

Soriano has a great arm but his routes to the ball are horrendous.

397 feet are you kidding me, 20 rows up in mid left center? that has to be 420.

Yeah. I don't understand their measurements. It's 400 to straight away center field. You know it went further than that. They're idiots with the guesses sometimes.

I love how Marmols stuff is so filthy everyone know its a strikeout except the umpires, that reminded me of the first pitch from the last scene in Naked Gun!!

Marmol does make people look silly, umpires included. Some of the swings at his stuff are comical.

Nice clean win for the Cubs. Soriano gunning out a player at home, Blanco throwing out a base stealer, no errors.

Zambrano no walks, Marmol and especially Wood were impressive.

Lee has his power back, overall a good weekend.

After a 1-3 start, to get a 3-3 homestand is a nice recovery. I'll take it and hope for more continued success on the road. Brewers can't keep playing the Giants.
