Fontenot did a great job last season...when Lou inserted him into the lineup. I wonder if Lou just did a great job of putting him into great situations, where he was likely to have success, or if all the pressure of playing daily as well as playing different positions has him producing so much less. In any case, he seems overmatched tring to play 3rd and hit hitting has been a disappointment. I agree with RFDC, that he would probably have produced better to date, had he been able to stay at 2nd all year. But Hendry left the team with no real back-up at 3rd, coming out of spring training. Then he trades for Freel and he promptly gets hurt. Very little has gone right this season, yet they are just a few games out so there is certainly reason to expect things may still pan out. But the job Hendry did in assembling this team, was pretty poor, when you consider the options he had, the money available and the choices he made. Had he traded for Roberts, signed Abreau or Ibanez ( not Bradley) and kept DeRosa, this would be a vastly superior team.

Using "ifs" in sports is really fruitless. Hindsight is always 20/20. Of course the Cubs would be better with those "ifs" in place. If someone had whispered into AGon's ear that a tailor made DP ball was coming his way and to NOT GET THE YIPS at the worst possible moment, the Cubs would've been in the WS in '03. Woulda, shoulda, coulda. That and fifty cents will get you a newspaper.

Folks around here were 1st guessing those moves, anyway I hope today isn't the Wells ass-whippin' game (about due for it).

All the more reason not to bring them up now and re-hash them.

Nothing like free baseball... I can't believe they won that game after trying so goddamned hard to lose it. Jeezus, but the Central is right there for the taking. One team gets hot and builds up a lead and it is all over but the shouting.

Thank You....I was calling for Abreau and Ibanez and NOT Bradley back in the winter time. I had formulated several trade possibilities for Roberts, and identified him as a priority. Nothing I said was 2nd guessing. I was disappointed in several of the moves Hendry made and commented then about it and just reiterrated those thoughts. What the hell does anyone want with Aaron Miles anyway either???

While todays win wasn't an artistic success, it was a win. The Cubs got a game closer to 1st place and took the series, by virtue of winning today. Both teams had multiple chances to win the game, but the Cubs were able to prevail. I'm sure the bullpen will enjoy the off day tomorrow.

i feel bad for randy wells. he continues to be the best and most consistent starter the cubs have.

0-2 with a 1.89 era in 5 starts is a joke. that kid should be 5-0
