Trading Marquis, is something I will never rag about. He sucks in the 2nd half of the season and can't be counted on when you need him most.

There was never a time when Marquis was needed most, that's kinda the definition of a 5th starter. Although he probably could have hit better than the rest of the team in the playoffs. Besides, wins in May count just as much as wins in September. He ate innings and didn't miss starts. Sure he doesn't provide what the Cubs are lacking right now, but he gets a bad rap.

Even if Marquis doesn't win another game it's still a HUGE win for the Rockies. They got out from under a bad contract for a bad player AND received a starter that has won 9 games. Marquis also has a pretty good shot at being ruled a type B free agent which means the Rockies will also receive a high draft pick. Jim Hendry, the gift that keeps on giving.

Like Frank with his Zambrano hate, you have an axe to grind with Hendry. He's fouled up some moves to be sure, and you've made your point (beaten your point to death, you might say) about the Marquis deal. To call Hendry the worst GM in the league is willfully ignorant. I believe you've said that, if not, I apologize in advance, but I'm not going to go back and find that. The above quote of "Hendry, the gift that keeps on giving" does indeed give one additional facet to this Hendry Hate you have... he must owe you money.

he was 9-5 last year in june

he finished 11-9 with a 4.53 era

i think its pretty safe to say hell finish this year pretty shitty

in 2007, he was 6-5 at the break in 18 starts with a 3.67 era, and 6-4 in 15 starts with a 5.73 era after.

last year he was 6-5 at the all-star break in 17 starts with a 4.44 era, and 5-4 in 11 starts with a 4.66 era after.

yes, in both seasons he started stronger than he finished, but you exaggerated the stats a bit. in both seasons he had a higher winning percentage in the 2nd half. marquis was a pretty solid 5th starter for the cubs, but i shed no tears when he left, and still don't.

He wasn't vastly overpaid until this year because the deal Hendry gave him was heavily backloaded.

The starting rotation hasn't been the problem (yet) but if they kept Marquis that would have allowed Marshall to be in the bullpen from the get go. The bullpen has been a major problem.

How much of the backloaded contract are the Cubs on the hook for? If they're still on the hook for a lot, then it still stands that he was overpaid. If they got off the hook, then it was a good move. And we still have to see where Marquis' numbers are at the end of the year. We're not even halfway through yet.

True Marshall could have been in the pen from the start of the season, but, to me it's been the Cubs offense that has cost them many more games than the bullpen (and it was the offense that the Marquis dump was intended to help, even if it hasn't worked so far).

The cubs paid the Rockies $1M and took back an awful contract ($3.5M + $.5M buyout) in Luis Vizcaino. So essentially the cubs are paying $5M for Marquis to win games for the Rockies and Vizcaino to lose games for the Indians. Definitely not one of Hendry's better moves.

Wasn't Marquis making $9M? So they saved the $9M, minus the $1M in cash, minus the $4M for Vizcaino. They're still ahead $4M. Given that they weren't allowed to increase the payroll, they had to trim somewhere, and $4M for their maybe-5th starter seemed as good a place as any. Not to say Hendry had a good offseason - he hasn't thus far - but I can't sweat the Marquis move.

That's assuming the Rockies offer him salary arbitration. He's making 9 million and will want a raise, so the Rockies have to be willing to pony up more than a 9 million dollar offer for 2010. In todays economy, that is not a sure thing, that they will want to do that.
