Yeah I think throwing away 150 million on this guy when the Cubs are at least a year away wasn't very smart. He's not going to get better as he gets older. Again, it strikes more more of a we better make a splash now move rather than based on how he's actually expected to pitch in the next few years.

Many have postulated that they targeted Lester because he's a finesse guy, more than a power pitcher. They tend to age better than power guys.

I see him as the opposite. A fading power pitcher who will now have to it his spots to be effective. I don't see that getting better as he ages and his fastball tops at 91

I don't think that's the guy he is. He's more like a Buehrle than a Kershaw. I think he'll age well.

But I will say Theo is no different than anyone else. People like their comfort zone. He knew this guy just like he knew Rizzo. Free agent pitchers are going to be about 30 for their first big payday. And they're going to command long deals. Either you're a player in that market or not. The Cubs can afford to be. The White Sox probably have to go about it differently. Danks is bad enough. Can you imagine having Samardzija going 9-13 for the next seven seasons?

He's never been a power pitcher though.

He's basically like Barry Zito or Ted Lilly. He's got a decent fastball but he's never blown anyone away, its about location.

This is a real good article from a while back on Lester

Heard somewhere that Lester didn't throw over to 1st base after April 15th last season?

If you had said Lester's going to shit the bed first 3 starts, you wouldn't have expected Cubs to be competing for 1st in the division. Silver lining, of sorts. Image

April of 2013, actually.

Anyway, Lester's worst months in his career are April and May. He usually finds his cutter when the weather heats up. Hard to be a pitch-to-contact/ weak contact guy without your best pitch. I feel like there are guys who post here who never watched a Red Sox game for the last ten years.
