MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- Chicago Cubs reliever Pedro Strop has a strained right hamstring, eliminating the likely candidate to close at the start of the season as Brandon Morrow recovers from elbow surgery.

Strop, a 33-year-old right-hander, felt a hamstring issue on his last pitch on Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels, his second appearance of spring training. An MRI on Monday revealed a mild strain. The Cubs said Strop is able to play catch but will not participate in game-related drills during the next week.
Meanwhile, Kimbrel is just sitting out there.

Maybe the Cubs are cheap.

I could believe the Cubs have already talked to Kimbrel about a very lucrative 2-3 year contract. But it does not approach 6 years or $100MM and Kimbrel has said no thank you to them just like he has said no thank you to Boston, Atlanta and presumably others.

Sounds like teams are waiting for the draft and signing him after that compensation pick is gone in June. I could see him signing a 1 year 9 or 10 million deal in June. Then next off-season he signs a 3 or 4 year deal..

Parkins said exactly what you posted yesterday on his show.

That might be okay though because they also don't have the substantial new "streams of revenue" to pay them either.

Listened to Cubs/Giants game on Giants feed this afternoon 3/21. The SF announcers said the Cubs are going to play more small ball this year, moving runners along. I'm thinking this includes bunting. Isn't this a total Theo/Joe philosophy change? Doesn't this open up a can of worms? What might have been previous 2 years if more small ball? Not bowing to data gods? Joe previously saying fans don't understand sophisticated aspects of data era? Now Cubs returning more to basic common sense baseball. I've got to see it to believe it.

Ah I don't think that is really fair. Happ is still a relatively young guy. Some time in AAA could be good for him.

Forcing maddon to play Almora everyday, good move by Epstein

Happ has plenty of talent. He needs to work on his mental approach to hitting.

They panicked and traded Jimenez because Happ was already on the 25 due to an injury, and playing well before the league adjusted. I think that Happ was drafted to be a trade piece and since they traded Eloy they felt they couldn't also trade Happ after 2017.

As such, I expect that I will hate Happ for the foreseeable future.

Plus he is being an asshole about it.

Duensing, nobody is going to claim him on waivers, and I think it is 50/50 that he agrees to go to Iowa and be their closer while be works on regaining his form.

I want to see Alzolay up sometime this season, let's see what he's got.

No, I think that if he hadn't hurt his knee, Schwarber would have been able to catch 20-30 games a year after Ross retired. He was always thought of as the last core piece. But he got hurt and that threw his positional flexibility off.

If Theo hadn't spent bad money, and made questionable trades. Cubs 2019 possible outfielders in the mix:

Schwarber
Almora
Bryce Harper
Zobrist
Eloy
Bryant
Happ

That happened in 2015-2016 and led to a World Series Championship.

The Giants announcers dont know what they're talking about and neither do you if you think "small ball = common sense baseball"

I think you do know that small ball does not equal common sense baseball but your anti Joe and Theo thing is stronger than your actual beliefs.

You say a lot of stuff that seemingly has no basis in fact. They fucked up trading Jimenez but it had absolutely nothing to do with Happ.

Schwarber had a good year last year. .823 OPS

What are your expectations?

Schwarber was never going to catch except in an emergency. Definitely nothing close to 20-30 games.

Happ is kinda Adam Dunn like. They constantly are killing the team with lack of production. But, they have pretty good ops & obp considering how low their batting average is. They sneak it with sabermetrics bs, but don't pass the eye test of the fan.
