How many top 10 pitchers are in years 35 and 36 in the history of MLB? Take away the steroid era where Roger Clemens would be one. Randy Johnson too, but I think he might have been on roids as well.

Not that many. Nolan Ryan comes to mind. I looked at Greg Maddux stats, he would have been one too. But he dropped of big time at 37. That's when he became just decent.

I don't hate this signing at all.
Even if he sticks around for all 6 years, $20M for a starting pitcher will be hardly be unusual by then.
I believe the tipping of the pitches had something to do with glove level on his breaking balls. If that was indeed the case, seems easily fixable.

Exactly. Championship favorites now.

Great signing by the Cubs. $21 M per is under-market for a free agent #1/#2 pitcher. I am not worried about 5 years from now. The White Sox will be winning every WS by then.

Yeah Theo knows they got one or two more years and then the Sox dominance starts and no one else will be able to compete.

Likewise, a tip of the hat to Cubs for saying "here's our deal take it or leave it."

I don't view it that way...I think the Cubs were the ones who caved.

I'm leaning this way also. I didn't think they were in on any pitcher for 6 years.
I meant in terms of the Cubs with Arrieta's offer

Gotcha.

I still think they caved on the sixth year for Yu.

The Cubs have still traded no one. I have a feeling that they have something up their sleeve. I'm not sure what it is....but something is brewing. Who is the best leadoff hitter they can fit into CF between Harper and Heyward in 2019 ? I think its Kiermaier. I think they could do Almora + a prospect for him. Kiermaier is good on the right team but the Rays aren't contending anytime soon so he really isn't that important to him. If the rays throw a fit I could do Happ and a prospect for him but I really like Happ as an everyday utility guy with the Cubs.

Amazing, isn't it? Theo just made this team better....again....without trading a valuable piece of the 25-man. Again.
He's still holding the "big pieces", just in case.

It is. He didn't sign Bourjous to sit in AAA either. He has the goods and I can't wait to see what he gets back.

The Red Sox still have not signed JD Martinez. I won't be surprised at all if Schwarber goes to Boston and Martinez gets told by the Red Sox to go suck Scott Boras' dick.

This Cubs team is good enough to win a ton of games in the regular season but they will have issues in the playoffs because they still don't have a #1 starter. They have 2 solid #2's and 2 borderline #2's and a #4.

I agree but what are their options? How often can you get a Kershaw, Strasburg, or Scherzer? I would have thought Sale was in that conversation but he shit all over himself in last year's playoffs. I still like their approach of position players as their core when they drafted when Theo took over. Let's face it- there is a lot of luck in getting a great starting staff and even when you think you have one, injuries can ruin it all. Overall, I like how the Cubs are built but they are going to need Hendricks or one of their other starters to get hot in the playoffs.

I still don't like their bullpen for the playoffs. Edwards is mentally weak and Marrow is better fitted as a setup man. Would love for them to pick up Holland or a proven closer.

How we do know Morrow is better suited as a set up man?

Wade Davis was considered a set up man before he got his shot too.

Yu making Homer Bailey money is something and also that James Shields is making almost 19 million this year as well. Perspective.

He faced 92 plate appearances in High Leverage situations, and allowed a .327 wOBA, that was the most PA's he saw in any of the 3 leverage categories.

He was pretty bad when runs would mean the most, and Maddon kept running him out there.

He's a 2 RA9 War player and without looking I would say those struggles were primarily in a handful of games. I expect him to continue to improve. If he doesn't take another step this year the Cubs may have to look elsewhere for a future closer.

It was over 45 appearances in High Leverage situations.

Where are you getting that from? I only see 11 innings on Fangraphs and 53 batters faced.
