Dunston was a singles hitter who never walked and had a shitty OBP. He was mediocre as a fielder. His cannon arm saved him as many embarrassing errors as it caused. His greatest accomplishment was being slightly better than a nearly dead Larry Bowa. If he wasn't a Cub early on with Ryne Sandberg making him look good you'd never remember his name. When he captured one fifth of one percent of the HOF vote it was twice what was deserved. Honestly the only thing memorable about him was a bunch of drunken idiots posting his awful batting average on cheap posterboard in the outfield.

He wasnt really a singles hitter, and he did not have an awful batting average. Of his 10 years with the Cubs he was only under .250 two times and is a career .269 hitter.

Was he better than Ivan DeJesus?

They both blow.

Sub 300 OBP and 415 slugging? What's special about that?

I am not trying to say Dunston was some great player.

He is the picture of average.

I get you hate him. But that does not make him awful.

He was not a singles hitter with an awful batting average as you stated.

yes he did not walk. yes he has a bad OBP.

But overall not awful.

Oh my God is saying he was a singles hitter the only thing you can argue with in my post and try to defend the great SHA WON? Look at that OBP. He was only a 2 time all star. He didnt get on base. He was a career what 12 games WAR in 18 years?
Nothing special.

I don't hate him. But was the corpse of Larry Bowa is better than you... I mean...
I loved dunston aa a kid. Because he was a cub. Not because he was good or even average. He wasn't average.

Shawon dunston was about as memorable as a chili cheese burrito at taco bell. When you need some fuckin chow after a 12 hour drinking session that shit hits the spot but when you think about it it's still a 79 cent burrito that you're probably gonna get bad cramps from while suffering a hangover.

Your apparent hate of Dunston doesn't discount his 2 All-Star appearances, 18 year career, 150 HRs, and many incredible defensive plays and running singles into doubles.

I'm not sure what or who you are arguing with. Nobody wants to put him in the Hall of Fame.

No kidding. He got 0.2% of the vote.
I dont hate him at all. But saying he was anything more than below average is malarkey. You're a Cubs fan of the age when dunston was a bigger than life figure.
But he didnt get on base. He barely hit for average. He never walked. He was in the top 10 for errors 4 times none less than top 5.
He was just a guy.

If you think he was a below average baseball player, I think you do hate him a little bit.

And I’m of the age where everybody thought he was going to be Babe Ruth and was a huge disappointment.

Nothing.

His arm was off the charts.

Yeah and it led to a lot of errors.

We'll pick up on how dunston was average to below average tomorrow.

Dunston reminds me of the current Cubs SS. I expected a lot more out of both these guys, but it never seems to come to a breakout year. Russell did have one great year,2 years ago when he drove in a lot of runs. Last year he had some nagging injuries along with Zobrist. I expect them both to rebound this season.

One more thing about this Dunston/Baez quibbling. Neither of them could hold Kessinger's jock strap when it came to fielding. Even hitting,Don had some decent seasons in there, but no where near Baez in the power numbers.

Baez is pretty good. I think he could hold Kessinger's jock.

Did Don Kessinger ever go 9-for-13?

That son of a bitch makes the wrong base running decisions but he's always safe.

And this time it saved them an out and got them an extra base runner for doing so.

You want to keep a narrative of Dunston being below average, but mention is 12 career WAR. Specific to the Cubs, he played 1250 games and had a 9.7 WAR. His WAR per 650 AB was 1.9.

He missed A LOT of games so dividing his WAR by seasons is stupid, and would only be done by someone without a grasp on how WAR works.

Ok I'll add lack of durability to my proof. Thanks.

Javy is winning this game by himself.

Maddon should shift everyone else into the dugout.

Getting hurt does not make someone a bad baseball player.
