If that was Contreras tagging home and stepping up 2 feet from tge plate to complete the dp.. You all would be screaming about how dirty that play was.. Rizzo is lucky that guy didn't tear his acl.

No, I wouldn't.

Why is it so hard to believe someone is in favor of takeout slides regardless of who's team it is?

If my aunt had a cock, she would be my uncle. Stop with with this stupid ass hypothetical. Focus on what ACTUALLY happened.

(perhaps Contreras plants his back foot up and to the right a bit, taking it out of the equation altogether).

I didn't like the play, the path was clear.. He's lucky that guy didn't get fucked up.

The other thing that raises the injury potential for home plate vs second base (aside from the the catcher not seeing at the runner barreling down on him) is that the runner can go harder to home knowing he only has to touch the plate and not hang on to it as he does at second.

I dont think anyone is arguing there is injury risk involved.

Its a dirty play because you never see a take out slide at home plate. Also, its much more dangerous than the one at 2B because you are sliding to the blind side of the player throwing the ball.

The play should be illegal at home. In this instance, I think it was a legal play, but a dirty play which could definitely resulted in career ending injuries.

Why not complain that MLB hasn't declared contact with the field to be an out? The takeout slide is still in the rules. There is no debating his intent was to break up the double play. He stayed within the basepath and took out the catcher leg. He achieved the desired impact as the errant throw scored 2 runs.

The fact they didn't declare the runner at first out for the slide pretty much cements it as a legal baseball play.

In a close game, I don't consider that dirty. If it was behind the play, or the catcher has released the ball, or he cleats him in the legs, full on dirty. But he stayed in the path and broke up the play.

Good hard baseball.

The catcher needs to step up and to the right to take himself out of the path before throwing to first. Coaching issue. If he does that this isn't up for debate.

Can we end this stupid debate. Umpire and Major League Baseball reviewed it and said it was not illegal. What more do you want? A Tweet from Donald Trump?

Trump, "Rizzo is not a dirty player. Why aren’t the 13 Angry and heavily conflicted White Sox fans not complaining about the total failure of the totally monumental collapse that is White Sox baseball. It’s a Rigged Witch Hunt, that’s why! Ask them if they still enjoy 2005 after the Cubs 2016 celebration! and losing 100 games every year! Losers!

Because he wears the Cubs uniform, you have no issue with the slide even though it is in direct violation of the way the rule is currently written.

If that's true why did it pass review?

What I don't get is Maddon's indignation at Hurdle asking for the appeal. Maddon was concerned that the appeal would make people angry at Rizzo? Too fucking bad. The call and the appeal went his way, so all of the histrionics made him look foolish.

I dont know for sure, but at the time I thought his beef was with the process. I think that is supposed to be an umpire review but it was clearly at Hurtle's request.

Some of it could be Maddon being butthurt over Hurdle calling out Javy for the bat flip pop up last month.

Hurdle seems to bounce back and forth between being a 'hard-nosed, old school baseball guy' and a 'new age, protect our players baseball guy.'

Frank will ignore this question because he has no answer.

The only reason he is against the slide is because it is the Cubs.

It cannot be a direct violation of the rule when both the umpire on the field and the review said it was fine.

Umpires are wrong sometimes. Some are wrong a lot more than others (CB Bucknor, Angel Hernandez)

Not sure why you gave the eyroll there, DT. I said it could be, as in maybe it's possible that part of Joe's argument was a little payback/gamemanship. Given what he said after the bat flip, it's certainly plausible.

That's why we have replay review. Why do you think you know more then the Umpires AND MLB?

The  was because it was a stupid fucking comment. Something HawaiiYou would post. Anything is plausible. It's plausible that Maddon had smoked some weed before the game and screwed a couple zoo animals in the club house. Maybe Clint Hurdle didn't like Maddon screwing farm animals and said something on the field. Just because it is plausible doesn't make it worth commenting about.

I can do without the goony contact in baseball, it does nothing for the game. I'll go with the boring take that it's a dirty play and completely legal.

I believe I just heard from Parkins that MLB now says that Rizzo should've been called for interference.

I guess it's per Jesse Rogers ... https://twitter.com/ESPNChiCubs/status/1001538587744075776
