you can't go into the post season completely punchless. there has to be some spark that jumpstarts the whole thing. and it certainly isn't pitching lately.

as they're playing now, they really don't deserve to make the playoffs. what's the point of watching this in october?

I think I figured out the offensive philosophy. We know Joe gets a binder full of advanced stat mumbo jumbo everyday. I think he uses solely those stats and the injury reports from the athletic trainers to build his lineup. He then tells the players "you be you and ill take care of the rest". This is not a chicken and egg discussion Joe. The stats do not produce the play, the play produces the stats. That would explain the stubborn approaches, lack of situational hitting and lack of offensive continuity.

and yes....i would rather they die now than watch this brand of baseball in the postseason.

This is exactly correct, but certainly not what the modern fan or modern baseball executive believes.

What does that mean? Don't be 100% beholden to stats?

Stop being so dramatic. They are likely to sew up a playoff spot tonigh even as they lose.

That’s the bite at the apple

True. 04 was way worse because there was no safety net. It was WC or bust.

Cubs probably still win the division.

Of course I'm not. They're offense is offensive at this point. The only reason I say they'll "probably" still win is I think the Brewers are due for a couple losses.

Post season really becomes a battle of the best pitching rather than the best offense and the Cubs have had great pitching over the last quarter of the season.

I got home yesterday and flipped on the TV just as they had professor flakey in the booth during the rain delay. Levine looked like they had dragged a homeless guy off the street for a free bowl of soup. He looks old and haggard.

Yep.

I think you just have to resign yourselves to it coming down tot he last weekend. However, there really is no drama to it. If they win they make and playoffs and if the lose they make the playoffs. I'd have to look but I don't think there is even an historical disadvantage to being in the wild card.

Really, the doomsday scenario is a tie for the division that requires a game 163.

Or a 3 way tie, which is possible (but unlikely)

The other hope is the Cubs are due for one of their patented "offensive explosions after not hitting for a 4-5 game stretch" that makes the average runs look good.

Rizzo, Contreras and Baez historically rape this guy.

There are two guys. Do they rape both of them. If so

Funny how a lot of you guys have gone quite the last few days as they continue to choke this away and piss themselves. Everything I had been saying has happened, and now you fucks went quite. Being in the Wild Card game is a failure and unacceptable. If they play in that, it's doubtful they will make it far.

Cubs better hope the Cardinals actually show up tonight, but I doubt it. Looks like the Brewers will run the table, I can't see them losing to shitty Detroit.

This is exactly correct, but certainly not what the modern fan or modern baseball executive believes.

I cringed when I heard Joe talk yesterday about the importance/goal of scoring first. Of course you want to score first...and last, and every inning in between. It's pretty much out of your control. I might believe Joe really meant it if he were to call for a sacrifice bunt in the first inning, but that's not gonna happen.

Wait, what?

Why would you cringe and why would he call for a sacrifice bunt (which pretty much always LOWERS the chance of scoring)

The Cubs don't have many more 0-1 run games than the Giants had in 2014. But about half of their losses are when their offense looks like shit.

Quintana has been very good following a loss this season.

Unfortunately, he has not been good when paired with Caratini.

Big Kyle gets to make up for his abysmal performance at the plate the last 2 games with another start tonight. The brewers seem so amped up that they are going to score 25 tonight. Its business as usual for the Cubs though. I see another loss coupled with a brewers win leaving them .5 back after tonight. They will salvage one game and be tied after tomorrow.

Hughes was saying that Baez is trying to be the first Cub to lead the league in RBIs since Sammy Sosa did it with 160. Commer said "160...I wish the rest of us could have bottled what he was taking."

That probably could have been arranged, Ron.

I would imagine he didn't mean steriods when he said that, but that's how it came out.
