Right, but 30 years goes by quick. It shouldn't be a surprise if the Sox are the dominant team in 2028. Wrigley won't always be "Wrigley". It was the same park in 1972 when no one was there. Time and the destruction of the other old parks made it "special". Now Ricketts wants it both ways. New revenue from modern amenties without losing the revenue from being the old special place. I don't see how that can work.

Again I have to reiterate that if the three biggest identifiers are kept, the changes wont matter.

Horrible comparison. The Sox aren't an expansion team. And the Cubs certainly aren't the Yankees.
Expansion team? So that is relevant but the huge fan base the Cubs built up over the last decades is easily overcome?

In terms of popularity, it's a pretty good comparison. Now, it turns out the Yankees built that fan base by winning, whereas the Cubs seemed to build it by losing.

It's not the same in any way. The Yankees are the last of the old time New York teams. If the Giants were still there we would have a better comparison. The Sox and Cubs were always equal until the mid/late 80s when Harry began selling beer at "beautiful Wrigley Field". You can see that big fanbase beginning to dwindle. Killing Wrigley won't help.

Cubs are a national team. That wont change.

I don't see how this is possible. The charm of Wrigley is in it's old time feel. The things they are adding and doing are the opposite of old time feel.

Two big reasons Cubs are much more popular than the Sox are almost gone.

1. WGN
2. Day Baseball

Im pretty sure the biggest reason I became a Cubs fan was because when I started to show interest in baseball at a young age they were the ones on the TV when I got home from school. Well it looks like games will be off WGN soon and day baseball is slowly being phased out. Wrigley is no longer an auto sell out in the summer when they suck.

It will take a generation or two at this point to turn the tide the other way along with great success by the Sox, but it could in theory be done.

Anything is possible, but it'll take a Cubs in the 80s type renaissance by the White Sox. I dont think they have it in them. Sox fans are pretty lazy.

Well, you know I'm not a Cub fan, but I go to plenty of Cub games. A day game at Wrigley is great. I'd go to see the Cubs in Schaumburg as often as I go to see the Brewers in Milwaukee. Maybe once every ten years.

And I, a season ticket holder go to one game a year. Opening Day. Were they in Shaumburg, I would go every weekend they were in town plus a ton of weeknights.

Agreed. But for our purposes here, were discussing Wrigley in it's current location.

Is a jumbotron gonna ruin everything? I dont think so.

If you don't care about how Wrigley is then it wouldn't change much. However, it seems like a lot of people do.

I just don't know. There are things that make Wrigley special. I don't think you'll know it isn't special anymore until it isn't.

It's like what makes you, you. If I cut off your hand, you're still RPB. Your legs, yeah, still you. But if it's just your left nut in a swivel chair, I'd have a hard time calling it Bryan.

"As long as they have the red sign" is absurd. People want the ambiance of a simpler time before jumbotrons and sensory overload and Monetized Everything. You see the sign when you walk in and maybe when you leave. You're there to watch a game. You can't carelessly chip away at that.

Why are you focusing on 1/3rd?

The scoreboard, the ivy and the sign are the things people love. There are others, but those are the main ones. The main identifiers of Wrigley anyway.

The underarmour signs didnt bother me. And Id like them to have a decent facility. Doesnt have to be sweeping changes and doesnt have to change the parks charm. (Fenway)

The neighborhood is as important component to park ambience as any of the features mentioned.

Once the team starts winning again, it wont matter what they do to the park. People care about winning. This is being discussed so much because the team is horseshit and all of their 'good' players are in Tennessee or Daytona. What else are we going to talk about?

A little harsh there. Just because the Cubs will only win the Wild Card this year doesn't mean they're horseshit.

That's great. Are you suggesting the Cubs should base their decisions on what people in the Schaumburg or other Northwest suburbs find convenient?

Right, Hank, but I think putting yourself in a corner where you need to win to pay the bills is probably not the best business model.

Wrigley isnt terribly easy to get to coming from IN. If you put it in Schaumburg, I would attend even less games.

I dont think fielding a competitive team is too much to ask. Even if the Cubs were hovering around .500, the place would be back to normal.

They seem to be slowly destroying the rooftops.
They are building a hotel and retail space and a health club.

This will change the local cool neighborhood feel.

Yeah, that's probably right for now. But I think a lot of people seriously underestimate Wrigley Field and its contribution to the popularity of the Cubs.

When the Sox win, they sell tickets too. Ricketts' whole pitch to Big Daddy was that the Cubs make money no matter what. If that isn't the case, Joe ain't gonna be happy. You can count on beautiful girls and 65 days of sunshine. You can't count on winning.
