I would like a list of teams that wouldn't wait the 12 days to bring Bryant up.

I disagree with this philosophy.

If that is what he was saying, I agree with you. Hold your cards close.

I think that's what he's saying. I could be wrong, but he called Theo Teflon Theo because I said the statement was a good one.

I find when you ask mike follow up questions, on his cubs takes, they usually kinda fizzle out as not true.

IT WAS A BASEBALL DECISION.

You require complete transparency out of your GM's, Mike?

If so you must have HATED Kenny Williams

No I did not like Kenny's ways. I do appreciate 2005 though.

it is a baseball decision. theo is trading 12 days this year for 7th year of suppressed salary.

it's only and correct decision to make.

I am not saying that really. Upon further thought my contention is with the media/talk types more than fans. You can appreciate his statement as crafty or less than 100% truthful. But in much of whatever Theo says it is treated as coming from the burning bush rather than analyzed and picked apart and so forth.

That is not a baseball decision. That is a money/biz decision. A baseball decision is he really needs more practice batting.

Epstein: “Kris Bryant's development path has absolutely nothing to do with ownership, period. As with all our baseball decisions, I will determine where Kris begins the 2015 season after consulting with members of our baseball operations staff. Comments from agents, media members and anybody outside our organization will be ignored.”

So if he's telling the truth in the first sentence, the third sentence basically says, "Comments from agents, media members, Cubs ownership and anybody outside our organization will be ignored.”

of course it's a baseball decision. building a team isn't fantasy baseball. there aren't unlimited resources. there's an opportunity cost to every dollar spent.

there's only one right answer. the thread is pointless as there is nothing to debate. a cfsmb special

I look at it this way. If the Cubs were in a pennant race, would you sit Bryant for the last 12 days of the year to, possibly, save $10 million or so at some point half a dozen years from now?

I wouldn't.

Games count. Either this year counts or it doesn't.

If the Cubs wait exactly 12 days and then bring him up....then they are just asking for more of a headache.
Probably should try and stretch that a couple days so they aren't shouting to the world "WE ARE PLAYING GAMES WITH THE SYSTEM!"
Boras and JORR would probably spontaneously combust

FTR I don't think it's wrong to leave him down at the start of the season, just saying.

There's only 1 team that matters.

And it's the team that's been tanking for years and is supposed to be trying to compete this year. So...compete.

Exactly.

I think they will keep him down longer than 12 days to "prove" it was a baseball decision. They'll wait until Olt reverts back to his usual form.

That bugs me too Doc but for me it was B&B the last couple of days. They were screaming it doesn't matter in a playoff run and variance and other poppycock. How many times in recent years have we seen teams playing a play in game just to reach the W/C or W/C play in game. I know it happened in Pittsburgh. One game can matter.

It's gonna be more than twelve days and it might cost you your first World Series in 108 years. Not likely, but possible. It's a money decision. Not a baseball decision. That's fine. And it's fine that Theo is pretending that he needs more seasoning at Iowa. But I don't see why you have to pretend it's a baseball decision. As good as you believe he is RIGHT NOW, you must want him on the team, no?

Texas (Elvis Andrus)
Atlanta (Jason Heyward)
Miami (Jose Fernandez)

Can't think of any others and don't want to look it up.

That $10M figure seems a little low (if expectations hold)

There are some scrubs making $20M+ this year. Imagine 5 years from now

Absolutely not. We aren't in a vacuum where finances don't matter. Again, this is not fantasy baseball.

This isn't a Nationals, Dodgers or Cardinals where it's World Series or bust. Kris Bryant isn't the "final piece"

This is a team where if everything breaks right they might snag a Wild Card.

As a result, Bryant stays down. Easy decision. Next.

No one could seriously believe it is actually a baseball decision. Strictly finances. I'm sure the Sox would do the same.

Just for argument's sake, I dont think ownership matters. I believe Theo would do the same if he was still Red Sox GM. Its not a Ricketts issue.

I dont see how you can say the second sentence isnt true.

You think he WONT make the decision the baseball operations staff?

Either way, that is the way you respond to Boras, imo

I already agreed the response was appropriate.

The baseball staff will tell him that he belongs on the opening day roster. Sure, he is not a complete player yet, but he is MLB ready. If you were shaping the roster in a vacuum, who else takes the spot of everyday 3B?

But in a way, you're treating it as a vacuum. As JORR said, doesn't the likely fact that Bryant will be pissed count for anything? Or that other free agents will not view the Cubs as a class organization? Or that if the Cubs win the WS in the next few years, Ricketts probably won't worry about needing Bryant anymore? Etc, etc.

It's a financial decision for 6 years from now that may not even matter or come to fruition.

That is taking priority over on-the-field issues for right now on a team that has basically been losing on purpose for 3 years. The financial decisions aren't in a vacuum either.
