Usually.

If your 3, 4, or 5 hitter has the 30 HR season, that should make your offense better.

If your leadoff or #2 hitter has the 6 HR season, that likely makes the offense better.

Banks was a shortstop, largely a position with just about a complete lack of power for almost 100 years. Dunn was in positions where you basically expected 25-30 HRs a season.

I'm not sure Ichiro could have to 30+ HRs while playing 81 games a year in Seattle. If he were in a more hitter friendly park, I think you probably would have seen him put up a few 20+ HR season.

But I wouldn't. Ernie was a great player on atrocious teams. He never played on a good team until he was finished. Adam Dunn shrank to the occasion.

I thougth JORR was referencing the lack of playoff appearances, that's why Ernie came to mind

I think that's the point. When he played on bad teams he got pitches to drive or guys pitched around him. When he was in a lineup with other batters that could hurt you, pitchers made him look silly. He's a guy who looks far better on paper than he ever was in an actual baseball game.

He murdered the Cubs. Many of his hits mattered to them.


His good years were early and the Reds were bad (and would have been bad no matter how good Dunn was)
