They already extended the netting. This falls on the parents for letting a kid that young sit in seats where you need adult reflexes. Like I said, horrible parenting.

That dad is probably catching some hell from the wife/ex-wife. Kids pay zero attention to the game on the field. Dear old dad should have been extra vigilant during pitches.

I was in the section where this happened. I don't even think an adult could have reacted to that scalded ball. You're packed into the seats shoulder to shoulder and a screamer comes at you. There's nowhere to go.

The sound of the girl wailing had many in the section on the verge of tears and is something that I haven't been able to get out of my head.

This is a terrible thing that happened. Why do we need a Bernsie and Connor show berating dumb callers about nets.

Anyway, why do we hear about this more nowadays? It has obviously happened before and long ago. Simply new stadiums with the crowd closer to the action? Bigger stronger players sure but not by that much. A slugger in the 70's hitting you with a hard foul above the dugout still would hurt you badly.

I think that's a big part of it. If you go to http://www.andrewclem.com/Baseball/Stadium_lists.html you can poke around some diagrams of past and present parks and notice how much closer to home plate the grandstands have become -- a change for the better in every respect except for foul liners cracking kids' heads open.
