Great. Now on every national broadcast we're gonna have to endure his insufferable Harry Caray impression.

Holland made some racist remarks against Asians in his stint at SF. Maybe he's Caller Bob's mult.

Quote:
The Cubs acquired catcher Martin Maldonado from the Royals just two weeks ago, though Chicago is already exploring the possibility of flipping Maldonado elsewhere, The Athletic’s Robert Murray reports (subscription required). The veteran backstop “has been marketed in trade discussions….with the Houston Astros emerging as a particular team of interest,” The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney writes.

Willson Contreras hit the injured list at roughly the same time as the original Maldonado trade, and since Contreras is now back in action, Maldonado is something of an expendable piece on a Cubs catching depth chart that also includes Victor Caratini. Maldonado has seen barely any action since coming to Wrigleyville, and is hitless (0-for-11) over 13 plate appearances in four games for the Cubs.

If Maldonado is dealt, it will be interesting to see what the Cubbies will net in return, given that they sent a fairly interesting asset in swingman Mike Montgomery to Kansas City for Maldonado in the first place. Montgomery has struggled in 2019, though he has posted good results in the past and is under control through the 2021 season.

It isn’t any surprise that Houston is again linked to Maldonado, as the Astros were had interest in obtaining him from the Royals before he was dealt to Chicago. If a deal was completed, it would mark the second straight year that the Astros picked Maldonado up in a trade deadline move; Houston nabbed him from the Angels last July.

Don't see Phelps doing anything for this team but mop-up duty.

Probably. But he did have some pretty solid years before his injury last year.

This is a decent acquisition. He should only improve as he gets further away from his surgery. He's always been much better as a reliever.

Somebody mentioned it in another thread but Whit Merrifield from KC is the obvious answer.

1. He can play 2B, this fills that hole.
2. He can be your leadoff hitter - .357 OBP which allows you stop the revolving door at that spot in the lineup
3. He isn't an all or nothing hitter - his .305 average would immediately be the highest among Cub regulars

It fills so many voids on this team, he's also under a team friendly contract, although he was a late bloomer so he'll be 31 next year.

Send Schwarber, Alzolay, and a Rick Vaughn to the Royals and get this guy in the lineup.

He can also play multiple positions which will give Maddon a boner.

Not a bad day considering they gave up virtually nothing of value. Now if any of those floundering high draft pick college pitchers pan out elsewhere a housecleaning of the minor league pitching program needs to happen. For where they were drafted none of those pitchers did dick in the minors. Lange was horrible and he was the highest of the picks.

I'm glad Edwards is gone. Total headcase with no confidence. I think his mental issues affected the team. Hopefully the change of scenery is good for him.

Had to happen, Maddon had way too much faith in him.

It's all that estrogen coursing through him from his plentiful fat stores.

I agree. He has electric stuff, but when he has a bad moment on the mound...he loses his composure and effectiveness for days...weeks...months. I wish him luck, but it was a change of scenery situation. The Cubs were not going to be able to harness him.

i think he was given more than enough chances to prove himself. he'll do fine in SD pitching in that cave, with very little distractions like the media and fans.
