Quote:
Cubs closer Carlos Marmol has been in the rumor mill for a while now, and that's not going to change until he's eventually traded. The latest is that the Cubs want Marmol to "re-establish some trade value" before dealing him, but that they've told his agent to "expect" Marmol to be traded, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The report indicates Marmol has provided the Cubs with a list of five teams to which he's willing to be traded.

Marmol, 30, is set to make $9.8 million this season before hitting free agency. He had 20 saves in 23 chances with a 3.42 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 72 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings last season. Control is his biggest issue, as Marmol walked 45 guys, giving him a horrible rate of 7.3 per nine innings.

Still, I'm a bit surprised to see the Cubs think he's going to "re-establish" his value. Selling him right now would actually be selling high. After temporarily losing the closing job, Marmol returned to the job in early June and successfully closed 18 of his last 19 save chances with a 2.06 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 39 1/3 innings. It's hard to see him doing any better than that at this point.

Agreed. Looks like my wildcard prediction was too pessimistic. Cubbies looked primed to bulldoze the National League.

Currently sitting alone in 1st in NL Central.

Some insurance at 2nd:

The Cubs have signed infielder Donnie Murphy to a minor league contract, according to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune (Twitter link). The 30-year-old infielder will report to Triple-A Iowa. He is represented by Lapa/Leventhal.

Murphy hit .216/.281/.379 with a trio of home runs for the Marlins last season. He has significant MLB experience at second base, third base and shortstop with three teams scattered across parts of seven Major League seasons.

Cubs firmly in the lead in the majors in terms of having a lot of outfielders who aren't going to embarrass you. Guessing this is a move that'll make more sense once Soriano/DeJesus are moved.

Hopefully this earns sappelt his designation for assignment. No way Borbon can be worse.

If you asked in 2010, you'd get a pretty solid answer.

Not so much now

Ian Stewart still hitless in AAA. BJax just got replaced by a waiver pickup. Baez can't hit the broad side of the barn in A+. Soler went nuts. No help on the horizon anytime soon.

Matt Garza will miss his next rehab start because of dead arm. Why wouldn't he? Wonderful.

The good news keeps coming. Hendry signed off on a lot of bad paper. Theo has responded with Edwin Jackson.

Hendry didn't sign Garza. He traded for him. I was not a fan of the Jackson signing, but he will do exactly what Edwin Jackson does. Decent number four starter. I'd be willing to bet the Cubs could move that contract this year if they want to. It would take the right suitor, but it's not as bad as portrayed here.

How can you have dead arm if you have not thrown a lot in the last few weeks?

This could very well be a veteran not wanting to go to TN to pitch. He would probably rather work out with the big league team and drive down to Kane County for a start.

He shouldn't have dead arm from throwing simulated games at extended spring training.

The meatball in me says 71-91:
* Pitching is decent but not as good (starter wise) as last year(before trades).
* Hitting might be a little better, still nothing to get excited about.
* Offensively, glaring hole at 3rd,catching,second base and at least one OF position.
Positive note:
* No Houston will hurt other teams W-L records in the division. (Cubs had it tough with Houston)

I'm just predicting a better record because it's hard to lose 100,two years in a row.

They might do it!

Two blow ups in the dugout this week. Gregg whines like a little bitch to the media (possibly going to be released for it). Castillo out for the season with a meniscus tear.

This train wreck is coming to a terrific conclusion.

What did Gregg bitch about?? giving up 4 runs and losing the game?

Cubs will consider releasing Kevin Gregg following media tirade
By Mike Axisa | Baseball Writer
September 20, 2013 7:28 pm ET

After allowing four runs in the ninth inning on Friday, Cubs closer Kevin Gregg told reporters he was unhappy with the team for the way he was being treated. The club has been planning to give setup man Pedro Strop a few save opportunities to see how he handles the role.

“I expected to be treated a little bit better than this," said Gregg, who apologized to manager Dale Sveum and vice president of baseball operations Theo Epstein after being called into Sveum's office following the game.

"I told him how disappointed I was with him given the way we treated him this year -- bringing him back after the first stint didn't go well," Epstein said. "He ran to the media. That was his decision. I told him, as a man, I didn't respect that. ... After a couple minutes he understood that he was wrong and apologized profusely."

Epstein later added he will consider releasing Gregg, but will sleep on it before making a final decision.

Gregg, 35, saw his ERA rise from 2.90 to 3.45 with Friday's disastrous outing. He's gone 32 for 37 in save chances after being picked up off the scrap heap earlier this season. Gregg was with the Dodgers in spring training.

The Cubs acquired Strop from the Orioles in the Scott Feldman trade earlier this summer. The 28-year-old has a 2.84 ERA and 10.2 K/9 in 31 2/3 innings for Chicago since the deal and obviously has more of a long-term future with the organization.

Coincidentally, Gregg triggered a $500,000 performance bonus by finishing his 50th game of the season on Friday. Hard to complain about being treated poorly when you hit a bonus like that after being unemployed on opening day.

The Cubs lost Friday's game 9-5 to the Braves because of Gregg's ninth inning work.

What a dumbass. I read about Strop getting a few shots a closing so they could see him in that situation. How did gregg take that as a demotion?

Pitchers and Catchers reporting wouldnt be complete without a meatball thread in which I greatly over value the Cubs and their chances.

Garza, after a blistering start, gets signed long term and wins the NL Cy Young.
Castro settles in and is much improved defensively.
Shark regresses and is just meh.
Soriano continues playing well and people continue bitching about his contract even though it is pointless to do so.

Probably not good enough to win the division but maybe can sneak into the wild card.

This is the most meatball I can get this year. Normally I would be prediciting a division title or at the least a trip to the World Series.... Not this season. Last year beat me into submission.

At least I was right about Shark.
