So does the bloom come off the rose now? Does the perception of the team change? Less interest in them nationally now?

of course. look at the red sox. plus, people are pissed that Cubs fans keep filling up their parks....not that the Cubs are to blame....misguided anger, really......but the romance will be gone, soon. No more Cubbies. Just the Cubs. No one will care about the 83 year-old Iowa woman who ventures to Wrigley....

If they won't win next year then maybe. They will be a "start of a dynasty" national story for the best year.

Been a rough couple years for JORR.

Last year he said they had 0 percent chance of getting to the playoffs.

This year he said there was no way they were winning the world series.

Still a good baseball guy tho.

I don't think the Cubs will cease to be a darling of the media. I think you guys as fans are fundamentally changed. Like the Red Sox fan before you. You were seen as these noble and loyal fans who persevered through all the heartbreak and pain. Now you're just bullies with teams that will never be as good as the Yankees. It was different with the White Sox. The Sox fan never proudly wore the losing like some kind of badge. What is your identity now?

No, not at all. I would have been surprised if they had lost. The Cubs just aren't special anymore.

That's true.

There is nothing romantic about being a Cubs fan.

But it doesn't matter to the fans I don't think.

It depends how good the Cubs are in the next 5 years and how "gracious" they are.

Remember, Boston fans used to be viewed as sympathetic figures too.

Not right now, of course.

And I'm not pissing on their parade. This is my 52nd summer and some team besides the White Sox has won the World Series in 51 of them. This is just another one of those teams. But in a way I think baseball lost something last night. And I think Cub fans did too, no matter how good winning feels.

I think we talked about it before, but the Cubs winning the World Series was one of the last great unfinished stories left in all of sports.

On a national level it certainly would have been.

There was certainly something romantic about a fanbase that diligently filled a ballpark for a team that was almost always terrible. It was a little different than Boston where the romanticism was based on coming perilously close time and time again only to be denied in the most freakish and heartbreaking ways. Now we have neither of those stories.

That may be true, but you know that couldn't last forever. The Cubs would either win or everyone would finally burn out and stop filling the park.

I'm not sure about that. And I'm not trying to start a pointless argument while you guys are basking in the afterglow. But the things that made the Cubs "special" were the ballpark and the losing. Ricketts has smashed both things. As long as the winning continues, that won't really be noticed.

I don't mind losing the losing, but you're right that there has been a lot of ancillary specialness that Ricketts has taken away in the name of revenue streams. I got an eyeroll for my troubles laying it out, but there is a twinge of regret that the Cubs could never do it the Stupid Old Cubs Way and had to scar Wrigley with advertisements on every surface, just like everybody else. I've always maintained that you don't just like the Cubs because they're the baseball team from Chicago. You have to sign up for all the stupid bullshit on the side.

Cubs fans never wore the losing proudly. They just......we just supported the team through thick and thin, hoping that one day the loyalty would be rewarded. Now, not only has it been rewarded, but the best is yet to come. Most of the best players are still a couple years away from their prime. They are just beginning an era of dominance. Great time to be a loyal Cubs fan.

My guess is not much will change locally. Fans will be the fans they always were and the media coverage will be more for a while but settle back eventually.

What I think will change is the national attention. You will see less darling team and lovable cubbies stuff. Less attention paid to nothing celebrities that are Cub fans. Maybe that is good?

Eventually should they become some sort of dynasty they will be viewed nationally like the Red Sox eventually. Insufferable. I am sure Cub fans here will take the trade off.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves with dynasty talk, but I think you're forgetting that New Englanders are naturally more insufferable than Midwesterners before you even take baseball success into account.

Yes, but I disagree on the Maple Leafs.

I love the NHL, but no one cares about Toronto.

I think the Indians or one of the NFL rust belt teams (Lions/Browns/Bills) are probably next up.

Except the people of St Louis. And the passive aggressive fuckers from Minnesota.
