Detroit will no doubt look to move him in the next couple weeks, only 2 years left on his deal.. He's basically making Lackey money but he's a much better pitcher. Not sure what the asking price will be but it can't be too bad, he's getting up there in age and Detroit is looking to dump salary and rebuild.

I think you meant Lester money...but he would certainly be an upgrade over Lackey.

You're right, thought he was making 20mill per year, it's 28mill per year ..pretty expensive but it's only 2 years after this season.

Yordano Ventura would be an ungrade over Lackey

I always like an AL pitcher moving to the NL for a short term run.

His 28 million per year is going to result in you having to go cheap on the other two starters you will need to acquire in the off season. That means you get Eddie Butler and Mike Montgomery rounding out your five on Day 1 2018.

The ace in the hole is Carl Edwards Jr. who might go back to starting.

Good luck with his stamina over an entire season as a starter.

not the greatest source but MLB trade rumors reports that perception around the league is that the Tigers are looking for a big return without giving salary offset for Verlander.

Verlander is a hall of famer who had a CY caliber year last season. On a move to the NL I'd be all over it.

Except the Tigers will want a bigger return than even the Rays would for Archer and the contract is clearly going to hurt at some point down the line.

if you take out a couple of horrid starts against his recent nemesis Cleveland--7 ER in 3 inn/ 9 ER in 4 inn--Verlander's ERA so far this season works out approx to a decent in the AL 3.75.

Verlander's change-up used to be an out pitch for him. A few seasons ago, he lost the ability to locate it and it started landing in the seats, so he decreased his usage of it. A resurgence of his change-up
would help, esp with LH hitters, whom his changeup used to look like his 4 seam but then tail away from Lefties into the RH batter's box. However, he appears to have little confidence in it.

Make this move in a heartbeat.

Guy already 6ady reinvented himself once. He's a pitcher's pitcher and he'd demolish the NL for a few years

 just read an article talking about this and it used a tweet from Cubs beat writer Julie DiCaro as its source for saying a deal was closer than some realized

Sutcliffe said today on ESPN 1000 that going to the National League would be a great move for Verlander and the Cubs. I guess he knows from his own experience. It was interesting to hear him groan when he talked about going back to the American League with Baltimore. He basically said, "Yeah, I was able to win 16 games, but it was a bitch."

I would go to a game just for the pleasure of sitting in the sun and staring at her for nine innings. Hopefully a cold breeze would blow by every inning or so to make the fireworks pop.

It's not politics, so much less importance, but a good example of why trust in the media is at an all time low. DiCaro isn't a Cubs beat reporter even if she gives an impression on Twitter that she has sources within the organization so that's just lazy reporting by whoever wrote that article and relying on DiCaro's sources is highly questionable.

You see how stories get built on such weak foundations. Stuff like that happens all the time.

This morning on M&H, Peter Gammons flat out said the Cubs would not pay for Verlander even if it cost them no prospects. It was hard to tell whether he thought that was because they didn't think he was any good, or they were reluctant to spend.

Bernsie will start the show saying, This is what I was told. They have a plan, and they are going to stick to it.

In reality, Theo knows he doesn't have the prospects to maintain a trade to possibly make the playoffs this year.

It's more than one trade they need to make too. One pitcher doesn't solve the problems.
