Scott Boras doesn't bother with talking to GMs. He just goes and targets the two or three most desperate or insane owners. He has said so, on the record, albeit with more polite language.

I'm calm Point is Theo's guys won the World Series not because of the baseball gods, but because he put together a World Series Championship team. You make it sound like he won off of Hendry's guys and got lucky.

How could that have been sustained? He bet on " the core" being good for a few more years , they werent. Every GM wouldve done the same. Worst move was not getting Verlander , he mightve given them one more legit shot at a title.

Well, there was no sustained success. Theo caught lightning in a bottle, and the Cubs became the Marlins 5 years later. As I said, I appreciate 2016, but that's not what Theo sold us. It's also undeniable that Baez and Contreras were the Cubs best players when they tore it down. Both were Hendry guys.

Almora, Russell, and their top minor league pitching prospect for Verlander would have gotten that deal done when they could have really used him for that playoff push. Joe knew that Almora was a bust but did a good job trying to protect him and put him into positive situations until Theo could trade him. But Theo overvalued his guys.

That is 0% lightning in a bottle, it was the plan to build for the championship window over four 90+ loss seasons. One could argue three straight trips to the NLCS plus a World Series win along the way is sustained success. When you get good, you have to eventually pay the players that got you good now you just have to wait 2-3 years to see if the prospects they got for Rizzo, Baez, Bryant, etc. pan out.

Babe is the best player they drafted and they allowed him to walk instead of paying him $8M. Every other player ended up sucking almost overnight.

You are correct. That said, you may be more likely to do as the Cubs did with drafting, trading and taking advantage of controlled salaries to have lasting results. All through the 80s the Yankees spent all kinds of money and were not in the Series every year.

Cub win totals were inflated by 3/5 of the division announcing even before the season started, that they would not be looking to compete that year. This was still during the unbalanced schedule era so that was more than 1/3 of their games. They used that bloated record to be able to play the worst team in the first round of the playoffs which allowed them to get to the LCS. If you look at their records once there, when they finally had to play a legit team, they weren't close to competitive...except for the one year the team they played experienced a debilitating injury.
