Didn't see a thread for general move tracking.

Jesse Chavez signs with Rangers for 2y/8m.

Surprised that's too rich for the Cubs. 2 win player as a Cub last year and can start, long relief or be a very valuable bullpen arm.

Not a great sign.

Wasn't he the guy that said he would pitch for the Cubs or not at all?

I guess $8 million can change a lot of minds.

This should be the He Signed For Less To Be A Cub: 2019 thread.

With the way Maddon uses his starters, I'd almost rather have this guy for two years at 8 mil than Cole Hamels for one year for 20 mil. Almost. They have such a big payroll, you'd think this would be no big deal...but I guess they want to avoid the tax.

Ricketts tightening the purse strings? The guy was light out. He was great. Epstein's previous free agent screw ups had an impact on letting a quality guy go?

He pitched very well for the Cubs, but relievers are so back and forth, I'm not losing sleep on losing him. At the same time, they do need to make some significant improvements to the backend of this bullpen.

wow.

if there was a guy in the pen to definitely keep this year it was Chavez.

And yes, according to Murph the purse strings are closed by Ricketts.

I doubt Rickets locked up his wallet because money is tight, he probably did it because of the shit effort he saw last year from guys he was paying 120 or so million to. He's probably correct in doing this. The Brewers did not have more talent on their roster last year but they busted their ass every day while the cubs dragged ass and promised to "go get em tomorrow" until tomorrow ceased to exist.

Murph said he's in debt w/ the wrigley hotel and other projects. but last years offseason FA signings probably didnt help Theo.

Trades and scrap heap deals is what Theo is limited to.

I could see he was waiting around for an offer from the Cubs but it never came.

Also, maybe Theo is trying to save all the money to get Harper.

What about the streams of revenue? The narrative was truly that Rockets and the new streams had bottomless piles of cash. Also bad deals like Heyward and obviously Darvish would not have impacts.

My read is this guy is not having debt issues. He is mad about bad moves and/or he will not be a luxury tax ignorer like the Dodgers.

So much for Theo only acquiring guys with integrity.

The bad signings of Darvish and Chatwood probably now are limiting the number of guys they can go after this winter. They are in on Harper, whether they get him or not. I was pleasantly surprised by how well Chavez performed for the Cubs after being traded to the Cubs. But I expected a regression from the ridiculously great numbers he put up for them after coming over. They definitely need more bullpen arms, but I don't feel like Chavez was a must have for 2019. he was a serviceable bullpen arm that had a great run for the Cubs in 2018 and that's all. A good lefty is a must have for the bullpen.

How are the purse strings closed? They have around $200M committed to around 15-20 players currently from my memory and will probably be over $220M just maintaining the current roster.

Chavez was fine. It was older Cub regimes who tried to catch multiple years of "lightning in a bottle" guys. If an old, $4mil pitcher is going to make or break your season, you have bigger problems and aren't poised to win a title.

Cubs acquire IF Ronald Torreyes from the Yankees for cash/future considerations.

By Randy Miller | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com,

NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

The Yankees have cut ties with popular utility infielder Ronald Torreyes.

Two days after being designated for assignment, Torreyes was traded to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday for a player to be named or cash consideration.

Torreyes was a very valuable reserve and fill-in starter for the Yankees from 2017-18 and in the early part of 2018 before shockingly being forced to spent much of the campaign in the minors.

At the time, it was believed that Torreyes had been demoted this past season due to a roster crunch when the Yankees opted to go with 13 pitchers after beginning the season carrying 12, but the Venezuelan didn’t play much even after rejoining the club in two later big-league stints.

Torreyes’ future with the Yankees appeared to be ending as of last month when the club made a waiver claim from the Texas Rangers on utility infielder Hanser Alberto, who was given a spot on the 40-man roster.

In 41 games, 24 as a starter, Torreyes hit .280 in 2018.

Torreyes lost his 40-man roster spot on Monday when the Yankees claimed right-hander Parker Bridwell off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels.

Torreyes, 26, hit .281 with four homers and 55 RBI in three seasons for the Yankees. He batted a career-best .292 with three homers and 36 RBI in 2017 over 108 games, 85 as a starter.

Cubs upgrade the Mike Freeman slot on the 40-man by reacquiring Ronald Torreyes, who didn't have a spot on the Yankees 40 man any more. Serviceable AAAA type with options who can get called up if one of their infielders is hurt and can compete with Bote for the last bench spot.

Cash/PTBNL in return, so essentially free.
