Winning the World Series in 2016 just got the talk going more, but since then it was downhill

Where did it go wrong?

Did players get a bit too full of themselves and lazy?

Were the players just not that good?

it went wrong allowing the dipshit media to talk about dynasty before they were even MLB players

I think Theo is a good guy but he never discourages the hype about him or the players he drafts

The trades which Theo did not make were more painful.

Didn't trade Russell in 2017
Didn't trade Almora in 2017
Didn't trade Schwarber in 2017

He could have traded high on all three of them. He didn't and ended up getting zero for all of them.

the 'core', the young infield from 2016 is all gone through trade - minus the ss with the domestic issues.

my take is that the cubs mngt. and actual cub OF players are to blame the most. we've seen the cub OF fall into quicksand, into oblivion. they couldn't hit to save their lives.

the cubs mngt. got soler wrong vs. the bust almora jr., traded away eloy. cubs mngt. pinned some hope on happ, while schwarber never approached the numbers expected (especially average) and heyward has been a bust. you get any good offensive numbers for 2/3 of the outfield and the cubs likely would have been in a 2nd world series.

needless to say, they are all to blame...but since 2016, that cubs outfield has been horrible at the plate.

i remember hearing that the cubs mngt. & scouting team rated contreras as the best player in their system - circa 2015, and they still have him.

Went wrong by going all position players and no arms.

Also should have traded Bryant or Baez in 2019 and gotten huge haul for them.

All the trades/no trades and bad signings hurt, but what killed them is nobody on the core got better after 2017 and were mostly worse.

going forward after 2016, going from strength to strength:

theo and co. got the infield right - bryant/russell/baez/rizzo. theo and co. got the c positon right - contreras/montero/carantini

theo and co. got the OF terribly WRONG. schwarber/almora jr./heyward. every single OF position, busted out.

hard to blame mngt. about russell. i'm sure there were rumors and stories, but you'd hope that type of talent would mature and calm down. the pitching was still good up to 2020.

Did it really go wrong? They made it to three straight NLCS' and won a World Series for Christ sakes. If you're serious about rebuilding it seems like its relatively easy to build a division winner, but post season success is in large part dependent on luck. The window might have closed a couple of years too soon, but when it was fully opened, they achieved a high level of success.

The organizational theory that they would draft position players and buy/trade for pitching worked until they didn't have any prospects worth trading and they curtailed spending.

It went wrong when they traded D.J. then they didn't get Verlander, biggest fuckup was Heyward, trading away Cease and Eloy for a 4th starter in Q was absurd..not keeping Castellanos.

I think it has gone wrong. They're going to lose 100 games next year. This for a franchise whose fans like to consider them equivalent to the Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers. What's happening with the Cubs would be completely unacceptable for any of those teams.

And I think allowing it to happen is a huge mistake. The "Lovable Loser" mystique is gone post-World Series victory. Now they're just going to be losers without any charm. I know what Ricketts is thinking. We can do this because of who we are, what the Cub franchise is. People will still come. And even if they don't, we sell enough corporate season tickets. So what if they sit empty for a few years. We got the money.

But Marquee isn't anything close to what they dreamed it would be. And I don't think all those corporate sales are guaranteed in the New COVID Economy. The way people live is changing drastically.
