Sergio Mitre found himself in the news back in 2020 due to an utterly heinous accusation. The former Chicago Cubs pitcher was arrested for the rape and murder of his live-in girlfriend’s two year old daughter. The child was brought to a doctor for continued vomiting where it was discovered that she had a ruptured renal artery due to the attack. That rupture caused her to go into shock, leading to her death.
On Thursday, Mitre was found guilty of those crimes. He is now reportedly facing 40 to 60 years in prison as a result.
Mitre had broken into the majors with the Cubs during the 2003 season, spending parts of eight seasons in the majors. He posted a 13-30 record, along with a 5.21 ERA and a 1.487 WHiP in his 454.2 innings, winning a World Series with the Yankees. However, his career was more notable for a 50 game drug suspension than anything he did on the diamond.
Once his time in the majors came to an end, Mitre pitched in Japan and Mexico, where he was playing when the crime occurred. He had previous legal woes as well, being charged with femicide in 2019 when he attacked a former girlfriend simply because she is female. The charges were dropped after he paid a 20,000 peso fine.
That should have been a warning that something was wrong with Mitre. He had been released by the Saraperos de Saltillo after his first arrest, with the team saying they condemn domestic violence. But he was back on the team weeks later, cutting promotional videos and signing autographs.
A fine will not get Mitre out of this one. His crimes will not be forgiven by his ballclub allowing him to take the mound once again. Instead, he is likely to spend the rest of his life behind bars due to his horrendous actions. Maybe there, he can get the help he clearly needs and reflect on his utterly revolting crimes.

Former Cubs pitcher Sergio Mitre was convicted in Mexico this week for the murder of the 22-month-old daughter of his then-girlfriend.
Mitre, who pitched for the Cubs from 2003-05, was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the July 2020 attack.
According to a report from Mexican magazine Proceso, an autopsy revealed the infant died as a result of hypovolemic shock — severe loss of body fluid — and fracture in the base of the skull. She was rushed to the hospital, where she died of her injuries.
Mitre was previously accused of rape and domestic violence.
Mitre, a Los Angeles native, was drafted by the Cubs out of San Diego City College in the seventh round in 2001. He spent eight seasons in the big leagues in a career ending in 2011.
