With the 7th overall pick the Cubs took a pitcher that had a 5.50 ERA in college

I’m not making this shit up

the cubs went against bruce levine's advice - take the best talent on the board. the twins did that with the next pick - brooks lee. he seemed to be the consensus 'best hitter' in the draft. i'm not a scout...i'm not sure what turned the cubs on to the pitcher.

maybe the cubs are confident of getting a few prospects in the next 2 weeks.

The White Sox took a kid playing in the 815. How is that spin going to work?

I am glad to see them take a shot with a college arm. They need pitching.

Kid was projected as a first round pick and seems to be a guy who has been moving up lately.

Nobody had him in the top 10. Just an awful pick

You response was going to be this no matter who they picked.

MLB.coms last mock draft had him going 13th and said they could see him moving into top 10.

But no one really knows, the baseball draft is a huge crapshoot.

According to the DH, it was a shock pick and a reach. But his numbers were deceptive because he was coming off surgery. He seemed to figure stuff out and was strong in the playoffs.

They also noted that the Cubs have strategically drafted guys out of slot to save signing bonus money to grab guys later that are hard to sign. They use the extra money to lure high school kids to sign.

So take that for what it is worth.

This underslot strategy is utter bullshit. Yeah you give yourself more bites at the "apple", but you also ensure you never really get an "impact" player. What is the point of fucking tanking if your not taking a top 5 talent?

For what it’s worth, Dylan Cease was a 6th round overslot pick the year they reached in schwaber.

Like cease, he is also was coming off a surgery.

I trust the Cub's current front office long history of drafting young talented pitchers.

I'm ok with the guy Jed brought in from Cleveland to be the "GM.". Cleveland has drafted and developed pitchers, especially starters, pretty well in the last decade.

Best thing about the Cubs front office is there are a lot of new guys with hopefully fresh ideas. Having success on draft picks in tank years will be essential. I'll give them high marks when they actually have some success. Maybe one day the team is loaded with young talent and that will be the main topic. Making excuses for bad money, and losing with culture, tone, and leadership bs then will be a faded memory. Instead having a competitive team and talking baseball, not how great guys players are nonsense. But, actually talking guys up on their productivity.

This is a great point. Cleveland and Tampa have figured something out with drafting....especially pitching.
