Pretty solid hire to replace Len

Quote:
Jon “Boog” Sciambi is the Cubs’ newest play-by-play announcer, Marquee Sports Network announced Monday.J

Sciambi has become a familiar figure on the national baseball scene, as the voice of Sunday Night Baseball for MLB on ESPN Radio and regular play-by-play voice on ESPN’s Wednesday Night Baseball. Even with the new gig, Sciambi will continue to serve as multi-platform broadcaster for ESPN.

“There was no shortage of interest in this position, and deservedly so,” Marquee general manager Mike McCarthy said in a network release. “It is one of the premier spots in sports broadcast history, and no one is more deserving of the seat than Jon. His personality, energy and baseball credibility make him the perfect choice to succeed the legends who have preceded him.”

In his role at ESPN, Sciambi has provided play-by-play for the College and Little League World Series. On the MLB side, has been an on-site studio host for ESPN Radio’s MLB World Series coverage.

Probably will be the biggest acquisition of the Cub offseason.

Given that he's staying with ESPN as well (my guess will be he keeps Sunday Night Baseball on the radio), I think that he's eventually going to do occasional segments on MVP as well.

Solid choice. I'd rather have him than Kasper.

Not very excited. Guy is fine in doses but if I have to sit thru his antics daily it will get old fast.

Let's see how it goes. How he works with JD and Dempster.

I watched him during the Korean ESPN baseball broadcasts in 2020 and wanted to turn it off.

That's because he was speaking Korean.

They had to replace Bap Uecker.

Wasn't the inability to do other national network broadcasts the reason Kasper gave for leaving?

That's because he was speaking Korean.

Also it was at 6 in the morning and nobody knew the players. BCB had a clip of an hour of him doing a Cubs-Nats game on TV a couple of years ago. I haven't watched it, but it is probably a better representation.

I have heard him a lot on the radio and he is very good. He is also passionate about raising money for ALS patients, and I expect that the Cubs will become involved with partnering with him on that front much like Santo raised so much money for JDRF.

he's NOT welcome.

Another typical boring broadcaster, this time all programmed up by ESPN.

We need a character in the boradcast booth, not these factory made types.

So you want a meatball, then. A PBP Mike North.

Someone who gets paid by the team but has the right to yell that Player X is a mope and should get his ass kicked to Iowa. Criticize everything and convince viewers that the team isn't worth watching.

Good luck with that. The only guy left in baseball PBP who has the privilege to be totally critical of his own team is Howie Rose on the Mets radio broadcast, because Howie has been there forever and doesn't give a fuck, and knows that there is no way he will ever get fired.

I read somewhere Sciambi is going to miss a little over 30 Cubs games due to ESPN stuff (baseball and college basketball). That sucks, especially for someone who was looking forward to him being the new voice of the Cubs.

He'll be out 1 out of every 5 games. That's ridiculous. Couldn't Marquee pay him more money for ESPN to go away? I guess Chris Meyers once a week is their answer.

Cubs are cheap now. And will be for the next 10 years. By then it'll become a habit.

Kinda hard to get your new girlfriend to do it all for you if you keep sneaking back to your old girlfriend once a week for a kink or two.

I would think that would calm down as his other contracts come up for renegotiation. For basketball for example, he could probably still do 2 games a week and just miss a little bit of spring training.

I don't mind him missing Sundays to do the national radio broadcast. Many times the Saturday game will be on Fox anyway, and the Monday game is a night game. Both Pat Hughes and Steve Stone take vacation time in the middle of the season, and guys like Jon Miller managed to do both team games and Sunday night games for years. The bigger challenge is that they need to develop a younger voice to be able to do the 5th on radio most games and give both Sciambi and Hughes games off.

At least ZZ isn't going to be doing any TV.

You bring up some really good points. I was silly to think college basketball would conflict with regular season Cubs baseball. Still, all signs point to this guy being a really great fit with Deshaies. It sucks that he's going to miss 20% of the games.

Hopefully Pat Hughes fills in for Boog more than Chris Myers.

Howie was great fun on the Islanders telecasts, but then he retired because he didn't want to commute to Brooklyn. Then the Isles moved back to Nassau like two or three years later. Solid work all around.

There is not much in baseball more fun that driving on a Saturday afternoon listening to the Mets implode with mental errors and being treated to Howie just going off on them for being soft. Wayne Randazzo isn't as good as playing the foil as Josh Lewin used to be, however.
