you need to get non marquee broadcasters to tell you the truth:

a few weeks ago, fox's adam wainwright told us that it will be difficult for brown to be a legit starter with 2 pitches. not mechanically sound enough - yet - to avoid disastrous innings due to poor command of his fastball and poor mechanics hurting the bite of his biting knucklecurve. that philly game illustrated wainwright's point: unhittable knucklecurve in the 1st inning, by the 4th inning, he was getting smacked around. been working on a change-up, hopefully that works out...will help. don't have much faith in hottovy.

last year, espn's david cone dismissed assad as a starter, telling us he has no wipeout pitch, when needing a vital strikeout/no contact. nice spot starter/long relief in a blowout type pitcher, not a legit starter on a club with playoff aspirations.

I listen to most of the Chicago broadcasts, and they have been clear he needs to use the change up more. His problem early was command. But he does seem to always have one disastrous inning. Again, when I saw him in double A, he did not seem dominate at all.

He looks like a much better fit for the bullpen until such time as that change up is ready for prime time.

The thing is his change up has been effective when he has used it. He just does not feel comfortable with it is my guess.

I would say if Horton continues to impress he will stay in the rotation when Shota comes back and Brown will slide into the pen. And that maybe a great place for him.

A change is difficult in that can affect your effectiveness and command on your bread and butter pitches. There's a lot of nuts and bolts that comes with a change. There's a lot of different grips. Remember the circle change? Helluva pitch. But it's such a radical grip and the transition back to your regular grips makes those pitches suffer. So it's not that the changeup is effective, it almost always is, it's how you can integrate it with your other arsenal.

Brown as a starter reminds me of Carlos Marmol as a starter. There is stuff there, but he can't stay consistent for 75 pitches.

I think he eventually becomes an 8th inning guy, but they are going to give him plenty of time to work on the third pitch and see if he can stick as a #4 starter.

8th inn guy? So he can walk the bases loaded with no outs? His first inning he sucks. No way out him in the pen
