Did I just hear Bruce say that the Cubs might sign Edmonds?

[crying Nancy Kerrigan]WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?! WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?[/crying Nancy Kerrigan]

We don't need him. The Cubs were lucky Johnson has done well after being released by Toronto. Now they're hoping lightning will strike twice.

It's Wednesday, 5/14 - and you just heard Bruce mention this? Do you live in a box? Did Bruce also mention that Heath Ledger just had his prescriptions refilled at Walgreen's?

Something happened to Heath Ledger? Does this affect his new movie?

1. I didn't know it was going to happen for sure. I thought it was just rumors. 2. I haven't been able to listen to the radio much lately.

BTW, I think it was Shia LaBeuf who was at Walgreens getting Heath Ledger's refill.

I heard the Cubs might be interested in Brian Roberts.

Just warming the spot up for an angry Kenny Lofton.

Maybe Hendry knows the rest of the team can only take 45 days of Lofton and is waiting until then to sign him.

If they do sign Edmonds I assume he bats way down in the order.

Lou has been pretty adamant about not moving Soriano out of the lead off position.

Theroit has a .400 OBP and should not be moved out of the two hole.

Lee and Ramirez will stay 3-4. If the 1-2 hitters don't move i can't see Fukodome being moved out of the 5th hole.

And I like Soto batting 6th, he has become a nice RBI guy.

So it seems to me Edmonds probably bats 7th or 8th. I guess it is worth a shot to see if Edmonds has one more good year left in him, maybe like Gaetti in 1998. But his defense worries me more. At least Pie will cover ground in center, Edmonds sounds like he is done on defense.

Edmonds was struggling with a calf strain. I think the ten days on the waivers have to help him heal up.

actually, he is about 40 points worse than pie. edmonds hasnt hit better than .263 since 2004, why now, after a .178 start, should we think he is going to be the early 2000's jim edmonds?

start pie every day, bat him 8th, and leave him alone. on the basis of 63 at-bats this year, we are ready to cast him aside for jim edmonds?

please lord let me be wrong about this, but jim edmonds is DONE, his best days are way way behind him.

I like it. There's a long list of guys the Cubs have brought in that excelled in limited roles toward the end of their careers during playoff years.

Kendall
Lofton
Karros
Gaetti
Luis Salazar
Richie Hebner

Cubs could catch lightning in a bottle with Edmonds.

Think the Cub would have any interest in Jim Thome then?

Silver lining: for the past several years, the team has favored alleged potential over actual production (i.e., Patterson or Hairston circa 2005).

This would allow Pie to hit everyday. His game's not improving at Wrigley, so this is his chance to get his confidence back and, hopefully, make some strides at the plate.

Neither of them are hitting right now. So I'll take Edmonds' below-average defense in the OF for a few months if it gives Pie his best chance at establishing himself as a solid player.

yes, pie can go back down and prove himself in AAA again. it would be different if edmonds was producing, but he is having an incredibly sucky year at the plate. and the cubs give up on a guy for someone hitting .178. that will do wonders for any young players confidence.

I don't like the move. I think it may serve to diminish Pie's confidence and I have seen real improvement from him of late, when he had a chance to play.He was hitting more line drives and ground balls and fewer fly balls-exactly what is ideal. However, if Edmonds does have anything left, playing for a team that is in direct competition to the Cardinals, may give him his greatest motivation to produce and help the Cub's win the division-and hopefully a world series. But I have real doubt about how much is left. It was 3 years ago that Edmonds last had a good year and I am afraid he's got little left in the tank. I hope he proves me wrong, now that he's signed.

well, hes a cub, so i hope he does well. i still dont get it, but i sure hope he recaptures whatever he had left from 5 years ago and beats the shit out of the ball. they must see something in him, it just seems unnecessarily desperate for a team that is hitting well already, they just dont need this guy, they have a good thing going already.

that being said, start hitting the fucking ball and prove once and for all, to all who still doubt it, that i dont know what the fuck i am talking about!

3 cheers for jim edmonds!

I've hated Jim Edmonds forever. As a Cardinal, I thought he was the biggest prick on the roster, and he always fucked the Cubs whenever they played. While it's a nice lefty bat and a monstrous upgrade from Pie, I think Edmonds is, and always will be a gigantic asshat.

I am not a big fan of this move either. His numbers have been going down the last 3 years. I can't see him hitting much better than .250 and at his age his defense is nowhere near Pie.

I think Pie was progressing as a hitter and I like the option of putting him in for late inning defense.

I think this is a terrible idea. Pie was just starting to "get it". You're not going to improve this lad in AAA. He's proved he can hit AAA pitching. He'll go down there and kill the ball. Problem was MLB pitching, and he's never in his career gotten any consistent AB's to develop into a hitter.
Edmonds doesn't look like a defensive improvement.
Any offensive improvement is going to be lost in the glare of not properly developing this kid. Actually, I don't think Edmonds would have hit any better at this point than Pie anyhow.
It's completely perplexing.
Silver Lining: IF they're right about Pie not developing, at least we're not giving him too much opportunity, a la Corey Patterson.

Enigma-well said. He will likely have a similar batting average and not provide as much defense. The only upgrade might be a bit of power. But again, I'm REALLY hoping to be wrong. Hoping that Edmonds is sufficiently motivated to scrape together whatever is left, and stick it to the Cardinals (especially) the Brewers and all the teams the Cub's face in the playoffs and WORLD SERIES!!!!

THE CUB'S END THE WAIT IN 2008!!!!!!!

The thing that amazes me is that Hendry drafted Josh Hamilton in the rule 5 draft a couple years ago but sold him to the Reds for $25,000 because he was obsessed with signing Cliff Floyd. How would he look playing CF and batting in the middle of the Cubs lineup? Sure he was a huge long-shot but for $25,000?? Hendry has to be kicking himself for that decision.

Edmonds has been known to hit the ball once in awhile, whereas Pie is either kind of hitting or striking out. There have been at-bats where Pie has absolutely no idea what the hell's going on. Pie's defense has been awesome, his bat has been warming, but he needs more work. I like the move to send him down, work out his swing, and let Edmonds get a shot at the league minimum for awhile.

This was a great move.

Pie can go down to the minors, where he will be forgotten, open up a friendly bar with Ty Griffin and Brien Taylor and Earl Cunningham, and become 1/4 the new owner of the Cubs.

He can then fire Hendry, Lou, and Yosh, tear down Wrigley, and annoint the new stadium "Pies Palace".
