After 4 games played, it sure has been less than a stellar start for Jim Edmonds. I never liked the move to sign him, as I don't see him hitting much better than Pie, who was showing improvement. Plus, he has less speed in the field and on the bases. I know, he made one very nice catch in Houston. Also he has left a heck of a lot of runners on base already, in just a handful of games. Am I just being impatient, or is this guy done???

impatient. He needs atleast 2-3 weeks to see if he is a bust or not IMO

Well, he's already had 30 games this year and has pushed his average way up to .171.

I suppose he could only improve...

Pie could have that average with better fielding and much better speed when/if he got on base...

They just signed the guy. He may very well be through, all washed up, etc. but why not give him a reasonable sample....play him (w/rest) through June, and cut him if he doesn't show any life at the plate.

I'd say to let it play out a little longer...and see what happens. In the mean time, Pie is getting to play everyday and hopefully tune it up a little more.

It's a long season.

Willing to give Edmonds more time, but after watching his at bats with the Cubs, looking at his stats with SD, and his stats the last few years I don't see much promise. Everything is trending downhill.

His bat speed does seem slow, and he struggled against some pretty mediocre right handed pitching against Houston.

4 games, in 2 of which the Cub lost, is not an appropriate sample size to judge a Jim Edmonds.

What is appropriate, however, is the trend he was on prior to becoming a Cub. You do not get a "do over" when changing teams. You can either hit or you can't. It's not like he switched leagues here. These are the same pitchers he's been facing all year.
He's taking bad routes to fly balls, he's not hitting. Don't need that now.

jim edmonds

2005 - .263
2006 - .257
2007 - .252
2008 - .171

thats all the sample size i need. the cubs didnt need him when the got him, and they still dont. get pie back up here, bat him 8th, and leave him alone.

there is a reason he isnt still a cardinal or a padre. he is DONE. a couple times he has gotten ahold of one since he became a cub, and it turned out to be warning track or short of the warning track power. he brings nothing to the table that the cubs need.

Had they won all four, would that have changed the appropriateness of the sample size? The Cubs' record during those four games is a specious detail to your point... but one you couldn't resist making.

4 games, win or loss, is not enough time to judge a newcomer to the team.

i thought joining the cubs was the fountain of youth. he was going to be so motivated to play for the cubs, he magically was going to become 2002 jim edmonds again.

guess not.

They should have never signed him in the first place. Why the hell do they think that every bozo out there who was good in the past and is on the decline will all of a sudden he'll have a career resurrection with them?

They didn't need another outfielder. They diddn't need him. I'm counting the days until he's Ouuuuuuuuuuuuut!

So far him and Pie have been virtually the same guy. Both have made some impressive catches and been equally lost at the plate. I call this "Trading Shit for Turds."

while not great, pie is hitting 50 points higher than edmonds, which would make edmonds substantially more lost at the plate.

MOFO- agreed-Pie has a real upside as well. Edmonds is just continuing his decent into sub-mediocrity.

Not yet. Pie continues to struggle at Iowa and needs the time to work on his hitting. Edmonds has not cost the Cubs a game or any money to this point it's a wash. Let's hope Edmonds get hot or at least warm and Pie get some much needed AB's and a confidence boost.

Why can't they bring up Kevin Hart and platoon Hoffpauer/Johnson in the outfield? Just have Fukodome play center when Hoffpauer plays right.

Kevin Hart could be on his way back after Wuertz last outings.

Edmonds has been looking good the last few games. Seems like Gerald Perry deserves some credit for slightly adjusting Edmonds stance.

Wuertz was frustrating yesterday. He wants to nibble, why doesn't he just throw the ball down the middle of the plate. He was facing Scott Hairston, not Pujols.

Wuertz has truck me has a pitcher that struggles when given regular work. It seems like he pitches better after he has had a few days off. I believe Wuertz has worked 4 of the past 5 days. He might need a few days off.

Not sure why Eyre hasn't been used more often. I think he has pitched only 5 innings this year.

edmonds has been really hot lately - gotta give him credit. seems like he is really killing the ball. i hope he can keep it up, it is a big help having a strong stick down in the order. lately there hasnt been a soft spot to the cubs order, it is pretty strong top to bottom.
