Good start! Dempster's has his A game slider through 2. Wind blowing out big time, a lot of runs will be scored today. No way D Lee would have homered on that on a normal day. Edmonds still sucking.

I think I've seen enough of Edmonds.
Never liked that guy anyway.

The announcers just had me laughing pretty hard. They said Matt Kemp gets picked off regularly, forgets how many outs there are, throws to the wrong base repeatedly, but he can be a very good player. I get their point but they illustrated it humorously.

I don't know what Kasper is talking about. Didn't you guys think DeRosa had a shot at Pierre at first? Even after the slight bobble I though he had a shot. It was a short throw.

I was thinking of asking the same thing. I thought it was certainly possible, and why would you ever not throw the ball for fear of throwing it away? If thats the case you shouldnt be out there.

Right. Kasper said "It was good of DeRosa not to throw it cuz he might have thrown it away."

What? It's a short throw. There was no risk. An MLB player should make that throw. A run was at stake there. Make the God damn throw.

I'm still convinced they would have got him.

Soriano needs a few days off I think. On Theriot's single he should have been on 3rd, on Ramirez's single he should have scored. He's afraid to run. With another 15 games with no day off, maybe it's time to sit him down a couple days.

Fukudome hardly ever hits into double plays. That was a heartbreaker.

Nice to get the home run by Ramirez in the 8th. Hope he can get on a power streak. Dempster through 7 innings and Howry in the one he pitched, were in more trouble than Bryan Robinson on a brewery tour. Luckily, it never caught up with them. I agree about the DeRosa play. I thought he had time there to get Pierre. Perhaps he just didn't get a good grip on the ball there. Very disappointed that Lou didn't take Soriano out in the 9th for better defense. Solid job by Wood. Nice start to the series.

If I'm ever in the same room with Juan Pierre, I'm pretty sure I'm going to strangle him to death.

I mean, seriously. I doubt I'll ever be in the room with him, but it'd totally be worth it.

Well done by Howry to get out of a jam. The Cubs needed him and Wood to restore confidence in close games. Ramirez calmed everyone down after that monstrous bomb in the 8th, but I was worried after Kerry nearly crippled Pierre in the 9th. But he was throwing gas after that and finished the game pretty handily. If only he could do it as well on the road.

The Dodgers left some men on base but you gotta like a win over another decent NL team.

The Cubs got the job done today despite starting Jim Edmonds only getting 3 runs (way to go Theriot on the bases loaded first pitch groundout, awesome). Dempster was solid, Howry almost wet his pants, but got it together, and Wood was throwing gas in the 9th. They need to win this series to make up for the Pirates embarrassment.

I never warmed up to him as a Cub. I couldn't forgive him (and I still can't) his unspeakably bad pseudo rap in 2003 that included a rhyme of Wrigley Field and wiggly feel. Supreme asshattery on his part.

Is it ego or stubborness that prevents Lou from replacing Soriano in the 9th inning of close games. Depending on the game, he will usually have either Edmonds or Reed Johnson available to replace him. I doubt either one of those would have lost the ball in the sun. Lou better get his head out of his ass before this easy fix of a problem leads to a loss in the playoffs.

It is the age old tradition of massaging the ego of the star player. There's a fine line between keeping the ego properly inflated to 35 psa (Pompous Superior Attitude) and still getting productivity out of the player. During the last homestand, his offense covered up all the previous stink in his play. No one thought of moving him in the order or for a defensive replacement.
Two miscues in consecutive games and a cooling off of his bat make for plenty of pins to pop his over inflated sense of self.
I've said it before and nothing has happened to make me change my mind. Feast or famine with this goof. Should the Cubs be fortunate enough to get to the playoffs, Soriano had best be feasting, or the Cubs will fasting until Spring yet again.

I just can't make myself believe that Soriano would shut down and pout about being replaced for the 9th inning of a game they are leading. I would think he would be relieved from that pressure he would feel with every fly ball hit to him. And I have to think that Lou is tired of covering for him.

His BA sucks at any other position in the order. Leaving him in the 9th inning is part of the mollycoddling horseshit he enjoys. He may well just take his toys and go home if replaced often enough. I hope not, but I fear I'm not wrong.
As for Lou growing weary of covering for his ass... no doubt on that one. He's losing hair and gaining weight over this bipolar prize.

he isnt going to be replaced in the late innings because of his ability to hit home runs. that is why they got him. the cubs will take their chances in the field with him, because of his ability to get hot and hit a lot of home runs. this is nothing new...this is why they signed him. games like sundays are the price they are willing to pay for him to get hot, and they arent going to replace him with reed johnson in the lineup.

also, sorianos greatest asset in the field is what? throwing guys out. in a tight game, do you want reed johnson in left trying to throw a guy out at the plate trying to score from 2nd on a base hit? his arm is below average. that isnt an upgrade in left. sure, soriano misplayed several balls badly in left, but nobody on the bench now is the threat to gun down a potential tying or winning run at the plate like he is.

ive said it before, and i will say it again, i am NOT a soriano apologist, and i dont like what he brings to the table, but we have him, and there is no WAY i am yanking him in a tight game for reed johnson or any other noodle-armed 4th outfielder. like him or hate him, the guy has an amazing record of tossing guys out at the plate, and KEEPING PEOPLE FROM TRYING to score, and that is what i want in left in a tight game.
