IF Jake Peavy came to the cubs I would expect him to drop off dramatically. There are #s to support this but Im just thinking in terms of Cubs fuck up everything.

For whatever it is worth...

a sportscenter (am1000) update mentioned the Padres were interested in

1) Sean Marshall
2) Ronny Cedeno
3) Felix Pie
4) ?? Ceda (pitcher)

for Peavy

Jose Ceda hard throwing reliever with raw talent. Some project to be like Joel Zumaya circa 2006

is Peavy a fly-ball or ground-ball pitcher? Bear in mind that San Diego is a pitchers' dream park...

Heavy sinker, you get Peavy! and if you need to alleviate some pitching salary call Hank "The Bank" Steinbrenner and allevaite some Ted Lilly contract.

and throw in Hank White.

Hank White is a free agent.

They'd be better off keeping Lilly and letting Dempster walk if they can get a trade for Peavy.

It sure would be a nice addition. But if it means losing Dempster, it might not be worth giving up all that talent. Losing Dempster and gaining Peavy is an upgrade, but then they would be losing a left hander that pitched very well down the stretch last season. Plus they would have to figure out who would play SS, if Theriot got hurt (unless they want to go sign Furcal and move Theriot to 2B) and Ceda may be a stud. Pie has had enough chances. If they keep Dempster AND make this deal AND sign Furcal-Hell yeah!!!

Steve........if the padres were dumb enough to take cedeno, marshall, pie and ceda for Peavy and then they had to let Dempster walk, I have no issue with it. Dempster had on good year, a contract year, I would be nervous about giving Demp. big money. If that is what the Padres want, I dont see any holes that cannot be filled, they would be giving up bench players for a cy young, I seriously doubt this is the package they want, but if they wanted to give that up plus d-lee for adrian gonzalez, I would do it.

I wouldnt trade Lilly, at this point, I start talking to him about a extension.

Peavey's got 4 years left at 11, 15, 16, and 17 million? If you can re-sign Dempster for around that keep the prospects and do something else with them.

While I would love to have Gonzalez, I doubt they are going to want D Lee at 13.5 Mil a year. Especially with Lee getting only 90 RBI batting third in the order, when they get better from Gonzalez. The biggest problem with a deal involving Peavy, is the money he makes. Now you trade off Dempsters 7 million plus salary for a substancially higher one. Plus, you must replace Marshall, who was making very little, as was Cendeno. All from a team that has stated recently that they are going to curb spending. Who knows, maybe the Cubs just want other teams to believe they are going to stop spending big piles of money, and then they are really going to make more big deals. I hope thats the case. They certainly have the fan support(3.3 million tickets sold) and revenue from broadcasts.

Really  He is a 4th starter

15-7 3.83era
17-9 4.09era

200+ innings for both years, he is a solid mlb starter in my book. I know he gives up the HR ball, but the guy is solid, how anyone could find fault with a 32-16 record and sub 4 era over two years is beyond me.

Steve, I understand what you are saying, but for me, I refuse to give the cubs any slack on money issues, they make more the god, i dont want to hear them cry poor, not buying it. 101 years, thats all I would say to Crane Kenney, Jim Hendry or whoever, win a world series and then go cheap, fine, I wont say a word, until then, spend to win, dont want to hear excuses when they have 81 sellouts a year.

The price of poker just went WAY up.

Speaking at the General Manager’s Meetings, San Diego GM Kevin Towers reported that pitcher Jake Peavy has approved a trade to five National League teams, and two American League teams. The NL teams are the Braves, Astros, Cubs, Dodgers, and Cardinals, while the AL teams are the Yankees and Angels.

no surprise that a fan like Frank sez the Cubs should keep Lilly. I hope he's not here next season. I don't care if he's left handed.

Well...why would you trade a guy who won 32 games over 2 years, he has pitched some huge games and yes, he is a lefty, he goes out an wins, the record says so.

Lilly = proven starter

Dempster= unproven. Yes, he was a started but 2008 could have been a flash in the pan.

I'm not saying I want Dempster either. In fact, after his playoff performance, I'm really not sure I do. I just know I don't want Lilly. Would you take him as a starter for your Sox? Answer honestly...

Lilly, or Dempster?

Sox already have 2 solid lefty starters, and Dempster wouldn't be worth the $, so no I wouldn't take them. However, if either of them ended up on the Sox I probably wouldn't complain.

cof, I still do not understand your thoughts on Lily. It is not like he is our #1 guy, and as Rodeo posted his numbers are very solid. What's your real beef? Did he steal your girl in junior high or something

Yeah I don't understand that. I think Lilly is a tad overrated and probably overpaid, but he's been pretty solid for the most part with the Cubs. Had a bad stretch to start '08 but still ended up with decent numbers. On some MLB teams, he'd be a #1 or #2 guy.

10 million a year for 15 Wins is actually a huge bargain when you look at other pitchers contracts.

as a Cubs fan, there is one focus...getting to the playoffs and then performing. Lilly is a flyball pitcher...it's just a matter of time until that catches up with him and small sample size be darned, he's a bad playoff pitcher. As is Dempster. So Frank, you'd take Lilly and his contract on the Sox?
