Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with Jim Hendry? Kevin Gregg was bad last year, & he is horrible this year.
The job that Hendry has done with the 2009 Cubs might just be one of the worse General Managing years in the history of MLB.

Trade Derosa for 3 pitching prospects.
Sign Milton Bradley
Sign Aaron Miles
Sign Kevin Gregg
Dont sign Adam Dunn

Hendry should be fired for fucking up a good team.

+1.

I have tried to be fair regarding Hendry, I thought he did a good job before this year.....but this past offseason was a colossal fuck up.

The fact that you had World Series type of team and decided that Kevin Gregg could be an option to close was insane. All you needed to do is 1)look at the high number of blown saves last year in a pitchers ballpark and 2) his lack of stuff to realize he was just another version of Latroy Hawkins.

A bad closer not only cost you games but demoralizes a team.

Hendry needs to go.

Woah, a Jim Hendry had a really bad offseason thread.

Hopefully this one doesn't go the same direction has the 8338493 we had before it...

I agree that Hendry blew it trading DeRosa. He never should have been moved, unless it was in a deal with Baltimore for Roberts. Aaron Miles is a steaming pile of crap, I agree there too. Kevin Gregg was a poor choice too. But as much as I agree that because of extensive injury history and behavioral problems, Milton Bradley should never have been signed, I never would have gone after Adam dunn either. His defense is horrid and I want COMPLETE players. If I couldnt get Ibanez I would have signed Abreau. Abreau is not a great defensive player, but he could have been a nice stop-gap until a better player was developed or signed and he signed for just 1 year-5 million. Dunn's contract was too long, for too much money and he sucks on Defense. That makes him a bad signing too. We have had enough of those already. But hell, I stated all this in the winter, before all the crap that has happened this season.

In a nice turn of events, we agree on a few things.

I, too, was very much hoping for them to sign Abreu (or however he spells his name) - I've never figured out how the hell anybody with any authority (let alone intelligence) thought Bradley would be a good signing ... only thing I can think of was that it was done on a dare. And, despite Bernsie's gushie love for Dunn, I'll take a pass on him too.

With the payroll topped out, the Marquis and DeRosa deals had to be made to clear room for guys like Bradley, who will be added. I would have preferred Abreau, but Bradley is younger and probably cheaper to sign. I don't think the wheeling and dealing stops with Bradley either. I believe all this salary shuffling and Hendry's mimor league acquisitions, are all leading to something else. Whether that might be Roberts or Peavy or someone else that has not yet been identified.

On a positive note, rototimes.com is reporting that the Cubs are very close to acquiring Billy Wagner from the Mets. He has already cleared waivers so it's just a matter of what the Cubs give in return. Hopefully its Kevin Gregg.

It's too late for this year but Wagner might be the steady closer that we have been lacking.

EDIT - Apparently it's not "very close" but they are talking - but 99% of the time when it's leaked that two clubs are "talking" it's just a formality - I hope.

Will Wagner have the phone number to Roger Clemens' pharmacist? If not then I am not interested.

"Better player developed???????" In case you missed it, we don't do that very well. Soto was the closest thing I thought I saw to that, but he could have a case of Dwight Walton!

did I miss something on Wagner?

I thought his stats were pretty damn good until his issues last year with the Mets.

Stats are good...he was just on the those Astros team's with Bagwell, Caminiti, Clemens et al. Plus he did generate alot of velocity for being such a little dude. I'm not sayin. I'm just sayin.

I salute Gregg for finally putting this season out of its misery.

Gregg isn't the only one who has made this season miserable, but he's helped a great deal.
