With all the additions the Cardinals had already made to strengthen their ballclub (DeRosa, Lugo and Holliday) it looked unlikely the Cubs were going to have a prayer of catching them. Well, it may have just gotten even less likely, after John Smoltz went 5 shutout innings, striking out 7 in a row at one point, had a strikeout total of 9 and gave up just 3 hits. Now, this was the San Diego Padres he was facing, so it may be wise to withhold judgement for now. But in the highlights I saw, his pitches were breaking sharply. If Dave Duncan can revive Smoltz's career, there may be no stopping this redbird team in 2009. Carpenter, Wainwright, Piniero (having a stellar 2009) and now Smoltz....

So Jeff,

How was the golf outing? I totally wish I could have made it.

Those douches in front of COF's group sounded like real assclowns.

I think we need to organize a NW Indiana Golf Outing. I know some of the people at Turkey Creek and we might be able to get a good group discount - albeit, it's a goat ranch, but at least it plays fast.

I'll need some practice on the range and maybe lessons before the next time I go. I know a few people at Whitehawk, which is a beautiful course.

I think they might be able to let us play for free and give us free drinks as well. I'm kind of a big deal there.

Whitehawk is a nice course. I think I have played it once or twice.

Despite being Cedar Lake, I also like the Monastery (sp?) out in that direction. It's flat and forgiving, but there are a couple of pretty long par 5's there if memory serves.

What would one expect to pay for a set of used clubs? I'm thinking of going to play it again to get a set. I don't feel like spending $500 on something I'll use once a year so I don't care to buy new clubs.
What do you guys think?

I'm thinking the same thing. Thinking of looking on ebay for some in the future.

What do you guys think?

At the end of the year, go to a golf store or two, and get these on sale.
3 wood.
3 iron.
7 iron.
Pitching wedge.
Putter.

Make it something that just feels good to hold. Even swing it if they have a practice area. I'm not sure how good the deals would be, but you can get away with just the 3 wood, 7 iron, and putter. You may be able to get all 3 for about $100. Realistically, you only need those three clubs when you are just learning. I'd rather have new clubs for the ones I'm going to use all the time but that's just me.

You may even want to check out one of those golf conventions. I've never been to one but I know they can have some good deals.

Then, go play it again sports and get a bag, and a few other irons if you want depending on the deal you can get.

I don't know if play it again sports is still around but you used to be able to get some decent clubs that way as well.

Jeff I know some of the pro shops in Indiana have used clubs for sale as well.

I think Ringo's in Merrillville might actually sell slightly used clubs there as well.

Bring LaRussa and Duncan to Chicago? You've got to be kidding me.

On Edit: "I think Duncan is a special pitching coach"

Really? Amazing insight. I never would have thought of that in a million years. Duncan! NOw if we can just get Peavy, and CC, and Manny Ramirez and Albert Pujols, and while we're at it let's get Buerhle and Jenks. Maybe we should think about getting Jesus to play center. I bet he can go get em.

Too late. The White Sox already have him playing 3rd base for them...

Sure you'd take em. Why the hell would they come here?
There's no money.
The team will be choking on payroll for the next 4 years, and the new owner, desperate to turn a profit, will not be signing any talent. Be ready for mid to late 80's and 90's style Cubs teams again.

Ok I misunderstood your O.P. I hope the team is able to trade out of contract hell...Ricketts does need to find more revenue fast...that is scary.

But no reason to go back to hell...You dont have to completely tank it and sign Gary Gaetti or something. You can re build the farm system (already in progress with the guy from Tampa Bay) and imporve from within.

Hey Dumbass, LaRussa's contract is up at the conclusion of this season as is Duncans. Those 2 could make a huge difference. If Duncan could get Marmol throwing strikes consistantly, with his stuff, he could be a dominant closer. Plus, it wouldn't be a shock if he got more from guys like Dempster and Zambrano . LaRussa might well get a hell of a lot more from this underachieving bunch and it would be a low cost investment for the two, compared to buying out all the contracts of the underachievers Lou has coddled too long in 2009.

Those guys are not going anywhere. Especially if StL has a decent postseason run.

Are you actually saying you think there's even a remote possibility they would coach here?
If Santa was the pitching coach, each bullpen pitcher would have a pony. Imagine how much better they'd all pitch if they had a pony.

Is this the kind of stuff you think made you a good candidate to be on the radio?

Quote:
Up next on the Elmhurst Steve show (brought to you by Bed, Bath, and Beyond where I buy all my white sheets): Lebron James will be a free agent in 2010. He could make a huge difference. If Rose and Noah can play well constantly they can be dominant players. Phil Jackson's conract is up at the conclusion of this season too. We should get him!

Or was that made up too?

My Dear Negro Hating Elmhurst Steve,
What kind of moron are you exactly, sir? You have sold your CSFMB soul for some meat. Or, worse, there was no bone in ribeye and you are just sitting at home, giggling like a little homo at all the clever anarchy you have caused on this board.
I used to be like you. I have been an evil little man.
But in all my douchebag behavior, I have never tried to win meat.
Is this the only method you have of gaining sustenance? Do you not get enough oral protein through your normal manwhoring endeavours?
Oh, Steve, I am do disappointed in you. You show much potential for evil but if you sell out for a silly steak, well, you are just a dipshit, not a potential disciple.
Good luck in the painting and assfucking for money business. I wish you the best.
Your good friend who loves you but actually really does not like you at all,
Evil J.A.C.K.

P.S. Have you considered eating some of that paint?

Problem is that I'm pretty sure that I recall seeing a photo of Dave Duncan, Reggie Jackson, Vida Blue, and Sal Bando dancing with Negro chicks at a DC nightclub circa 1972.
