About two weeks ago or so after Thome was traded, Mac and Meat had a segment about players you missed the most when they were traded from either side of town.

There were two for me - Bill Madlock and Billy Buckner.

Bill Madlock was my favorite Cub. The guy could flat out rake. I never got used to seeing him in those dopey Pirate hats.

Bill Buckner could also flat out rake. The thing I loved about Buckner was that if a pitch came in high and tight, you could expect within a few pitches to see his bat "slip" out of his hand in the general direction of the pitcher. After he was traded to the Red Sox, I still followed him and of course we all know about 1986.

I was always obsessed in the '80s about all the Cubs relievers that were traded and became closers elsewhere.

Sutter and Smith, of course, but also...

Willie Hernandez
Bill Caudill
Jay Howell
Dennis Eckersley
Ron Davis
Dave Geisel
Donnie Moore

There were a couple others I'm missing too I think. Not counting Gossage and Tidrow and those guys that were at the end of their career.

I always missed Shawon Dunston when he was gone.

I have spent too many of my Cub formulative years dealing with douches like Steve Ontiveros and Pete Lacock.

That Madlock trade really scarred you, huh? Been waiting 35 years for a place to vent it?

My brother hated Jim Barr for life for beaning Madlock one time.

Yes. Good 'ole #1 Jose Cardenal was my favorite Cub as a youth.

I traded my Billy Williams baseball card for a Jose Cardenal.

Not my best financial transaction. Unfortunately, not my worst either.

The Maddux reference is too painful to even consider.

He reminds me an old Cub by the name of Mick Kelleher.

god I miss the old Cubs - not that they were good, but they sure as hell were fun.

Gimme a George Mitterwald, Tarzan Joe Wallace, Manny Trillo, Jerry Morales, Barry Foote, Jose Cardinal anytime over the collection of underachievers we have today.
