Former Cubs ace Prior still hopeful of comeback
November 12, 2009

Former Cubs phenom Mark Prior might not be done just yet. ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports that Prior, released last spring by the San Diego Padres after a failed comeback attempt from shoulder surgery, is working out and throwing off flat ground in preparation for auditioning with scouts.

Meanwhile, Kerry Wood -- the other half of the 1-2 power-pitching punch that Cubs fans envisioned leading the team to World Series glory -- popped up on Olney's Twitter account with the news that the Indians would consider moving the closer if they can find the right deal to shed his salary.

Wood, who was 3-3 with 20 saves and a 4.25 ERA for Cleveland last season, will be entering the second year of a two-year, $20.5 million contract).

I hope it works out for Wood.

Question of ethics, boys...
Is it wrong to hope that Prior never comes back?

Followup... do you hope it works out for Prior? Do you hope it works out for Wood?

I'm right there with you. I root against Prior and cheer for Kerry because I always felt Wood was giving everything he had while Prior held back at the slightest bit of peril. I have nothing to prove that, it's just my observation.

I don't think its wrong for you guys to want Prior to fail. He had a good 2003, and otherwise was a sally and wouldn't play thru any kind of pain, and was a total jackass off the field.

Kerry Wood had a ton of injuries and stole $$ too, but always worked hard and said and did the right things.

I was a total Priorphile and I still would like him to do well.

The off the field stuff didnt bother me...I was just ducky with it.

Rob Neyer wrote an article a while back (ill try to find it and edit) about expectations.

It started with Prior's Hall of Fame Plaque
It had him winning 300 Four World Series 2 with Cubs 2 with yankees 3 Cy Youngs

He said thats how it felt watching him in 2003. It was an interesting article. It was like a lesson on hype and the thought of how many things must go right for a star to match said hype

Exactly. Kerry wood wanted to take the ball every fifth day, but his body wouldn't let him. Prior was just a spoiled pussy.

I remember when we were told that Prior had the "perfect" mechanics and Mike Marshall laughed in everyone's face. Mike Marshall said that Prior had the worse mechanics he had ever seen (paraphrased) and that he would be lucky to not blow out his shoulder or elbow.

25 towel drills later and Marshall is a genius.

I thought Prior was a tool, but I always wanted him to pitch well for the Cubs.

I'd consider resigning him and letting him toil in the minor leagues to see if his old form could be regained - but most likely not.

I absolutely LOVE the fact that Joe Mauer is about to win his first MVP award while Prior and his bleeding pussy hasn't thrown a pitch in over 3 years.

Is it bad that I don't really care what the rest of them do from here on out. They aren't on the Cubs anymore. If neither of them ever pitched in the majors again that would be just fine with me. I just hope the Cubs don't get suckered into bringing Wood back.
